I was wondering if anyone knew what normally happens when the cops are out with the radar guns. I was riding the other day and was over the speed limit and saw the cops pointing the radar gun at me. I went past and they didn’t follow and people tell me that’s how they get you. Does that mean that if they didn’t give chase that i’m safe? Or do they also have cameras onboard that take your reg and send it in the post? It was a squad car and not a van and the way they were pointed it would only record the back plate which sucks. Any advice? Guess I’ll know soon enough if I get points through the post.
Different forces have different procedures. In London they would normally try and stop you there and then. However if they felt you were going so fast that they had no chance of catching you, they would just report you on your registration number. They have 14 days from the date of the offence to serve a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) on the registered keeper of the bike.
In some county forces they do just sit by the side of the road and record registration numbers and go down the NIP route…
Hopefully someone who knows can correct me if I’m wrong but I would have thought them unlikely to pull people who are only 10% over the limit. 33mph in a so? 44mph in a 40? Not so sure they would.
Traffic copper explained it to me once, each police force sets it’s own 10% + x formula…he was in the midlands and told me they were 10% + 10mph (from memory) but he said some areas were as low as 10% + 3mph. Essex was defo a low one.
