Pliers and Glue?!

Apparently, I was wrong heavy sarcasm here

If this is what socialized medicine brings, I want no part of it.

Do you hear me Hillary Clinton?

Hh he … I’ve fixed a broken crown with super glue before. I was skint at the time.

Having lived in the US, the typical stereotype around us limeys is that we all have medieval style teeth anyway. At least now we have a dental service to match.

I have to go to the dentist this week as my wooden gnashers (handed down through generations of my family since AD1172) have got Dutch Elms Disease…

Out of interest, what access to dental care does the poorer portion of the US populace have ?

ie. those living in a trailer park in Georgia, a shack in the Appalachians or the projects in Chicago etc. ?

Not much without a medicare plan. Still Cletus don’t mind as he just has the one tooth and he whistles through it whilst playing duelling banjos

Hollywood smiles are only for the rich in UK or US.

Not really…I’m not rich and have fantastic dental coverage. We all get regular cleanings every 6 months…my daughter is in braces right now…I broke my upper palate playing rugby in college…had all of that repaired with a nice bridge…piece of cake.Of course, I have a good job that provides good insurance for reasonable rates. I’ve worked hard to make myself marketable and employable…not everyone does…those that don’t probably don’t have good healthcare options available. BUT…That is really their choice, isn’t it? If people want to take the lazy way out and lay around their trailer in Georgia all day instead of working to better their lot through education and hard work? Hey, no worries…this is America…you are free to do so. BUT…they shouldn’t then turn around and whine about all the things that they DON’T haveLife is a series of choices…and choices have consequences. To “socialize” medicine…so that EVERYONE…regardless of ability or desire to work hard or means to pay, gets the same medical coverage…which is going to be something significantly LESS than what a capitalistic system would provide, is complete sh$t.IMHO, of course.

Aargh…I spent ages typing a long reply basically agreeing with you and decrying the wastage in the NHS that ensures our wonderful nurses and clinicians get the royal shaft from the Govt. and then it ends up just posting up your quoted post.

I’ll take that as a sign that I need to get back on with my work:angry:

KSGregman,
“To “socialize” medicine…so that EVERYONE…regardless of ability or desire to work hard or means to pay, gets the same medical coverage…which is going to be something significantly LESS than what a capitalistic system would provide, is complete sh$t. IMHO, of course.”

The same could be said about other services such as Policing, Fire/Paramedic service etc etc.

I saw a recent programme by Michael whatshisname called ‘Sicko’ and I must admit, I was quite shocked by it. I have no doubts he just showed some of the worse case’s he could find though. Included some bloke (with no medical insurance) who managed to lop two of his fingers off on a desk saw - he got to hospital and was given a choice of having his ring finger put back on for $12k and if he wanted his middle finger back then he’d need another $50+K.

Having been through our NHS on a good few occasions, I think I’ll stick with them.

Me too.

I don’t for a minute think the NHS is perfect & certainly in recent years a lot of money has just been thrown at it without proper control on how or what it is spent on.

However, I’ve been on American based bike forums in the past that have had fund raising appeals for members who’ve been injured in bike accidents & it’s transpired that their employers medical plans specifically excluded cover for bike accidents (apparently an increasingly common cost-cutting trend amongst employers over there as medical insurance costs have increased). The people in question had been hard working & educated, the appeals were to pay for what we’d consider basic stuff.

As for the dentistry, there’s no shortage of dentists over here, it’s just ones providing NHS (ie. free) cover that are in short supply, so based on KSG’s response, the only real ‘story’ in the original article is that poor folks over here have a chance of getting proper dental care unlike in the US, who it appears only have access to the pliers & glue option.

Agree.

Having grown up under that pseudo-libertarian vulture named Thatcher, I’m very jaded when I hear people bitch about ‘social health care’ etc.

If you really believe in the power of the market to deal with your social existence, then dismantle your army, your police force, and every other authoritarian edifice that supports your state. Stop messing around with people’s sex lives and other ‘recreational’ choices, and finally, open your borders. Then , I might actually take you seriously.
