Plastic bag wrapped around rear sprocket

:pinch:

At some point on my commute home - I picked up a Tesco carrier bag between my rear sprocket and chain

Has this happened to anyone else? Is it likely to have caused any damage to anything? I had a quick look and none of the sprocket teeth looked to be broken - but I didn’t have a close look - and I didn’t inspect my chain either … assume I should before setting off for my commute tomorrow morning?

For what difference it makes, it wheels about fine, and I made it all the way home without realising there was anything wrong - so it wasn’t effecting the handling/making any noise etc.

Don`t think a Tescos carrier bag would cause any damage as long as it did not contain tins of Tesco value baked beans.

Sound advice as ever - fanx

maybe inspect the front sprocket / remove cover just to make sure…and whilst it’s off you can clean out the chain lube crud that builds up:D

Good call GP, that`s where the beans tend to end up.

Note, Heinz or Branston beans will be fine!

Its what first came to mind.
A carrier bag wont do anything to a sprocket, but you may have shreds of bag in chain links or in the front sprocket.

May have stretched things out a bit, check chain tension perhaps?

Oh yes, you’ll definitely have stretched the bag a fair bit. Perhaps get a fresh one from Tescos.

A plastic bag won’t stretch a chain though, but hey nothing wrong with doing a bit of maintenance whilst you’re pulling out the remaining bits of polythene.

Almost certainly no damage and far better place to get a carrier bag stuck than wrapped around the front tyre in the rain while leaning into a bend.

Guess how I know about the latter.
