the 1 you shown i dont think was piston into chest.
although it does happen more on the big harley/v twim lumps, you may notice on some of the top fuel etc that the blokes wear a plate of steel or summat on their chest.

that was a nitrous backfire in the airbox and the air intake tube hitting his hand
