I say strike get the army on the streets, could you see them taking abuse from hoodys think not a butt stock in the face and a trip down a flight of stairs would sort the issue.
As for pay they should back date it being on 24k in London is not really much money is it you cant even buy a house on that money in London unless you have a huge deposit.
Er hang on. I understood that a payrise of 2.5% had been deferred from September to December? Based on the aforementioned 24k pa salary am I right in thinking then that we’re talking about £50 extra a month before tax and NI? I agree that it’s not acceptable if the Government has commited to a payrise on a certain date and doesn’t honour it but isn’t threatening industrial action a bit out of proportion? The police are still getting (a well-deserved) payrise, just a couple of months later than they should be. In the private sector there are no guaranteed pay rises and I certainly don’t expect (or stand any chance of getting) an automatic payrise every year- it’s more a question of negotiating (begging/ grovelling etc.) and weighing up how much I think my employer can reasonably afford to pay me based on the businesses performance, the general economic situation etc. Seeing as the economy is taking a bit of a dive at the moment shouldn’t the police be a bit more circumspect… and maybe look at negotiating a bigger rise next year?
yes I am lying down now feel all faint…mind you I am in moscow…and its snowing and the police hold guns and no one takes a blind bit of notice of them. Mostly because to raise money in the past they had to take cash off you direct for doing naughty things like looking ugly, or wearing a short skirt and I jest you not…
our police are doing a herculian job, we dont help them, and 2.5% is a pittance on 24k…but the pension is a damn good deal so its not all bad…
Pay the backdated rise and ensure that further increases are actually in line with real inflation. This is just taking the ****. The police have a hard enough job to do as things stand. In other “3rd world” countries, low paid police are actually part of the crime problem quite simply because they cannot make a living on what government deems a worthy wage while the ministers will feather their own beds as heavily as possible with huge pensions too. Just taking the ****. The ministers should have all “rights and expenses” curtailed and do what other people do, make do with what you have and make it work.
Lessismore, ok, first of all. This years pay negotiations started off by the Police asking for 3.9% and the Govt offering 2.3%. Both sides couldn’t agree and it went to arbitration which we have always been told that the Govt would stick by their independent decision. They made their independent decision and it was to award us a 2.5% increase backdated to when we should have been given it in September. The Home Secretary has then decided that she would kick this into touch and not award it from Sept - this then equals a 1.9% payrise. The Home Secretary (courtesy of the Booth Report) is also intent on doing away with the Police Negotiating Board and making some new formula of their own where they decide what we get and that is it - no talks no discussions that is it.We are not (at this time) threatening industrial action as that is illegal, we are having a ballot to see if all members want the Federation to approach the Goverment and if necessary the European Court to overturn this law.Simply put, the job we do (like the Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, The Armed Forces and Nurses) can not be compared to any other in the private sector or with each other as they are completely different.
Specifically in the Police, our Private lifes are completely affected constantly - in what other job (in the private sector) do you at a moments notice have to ‘place yourself on duty’ to assist someone - not just out of goodwill (as many members of the public would anyway), as if you don’t you are also committing diciplinary offences that you could be sacked for. What other job whilst on Holiday (as has happened to me) do you have to leave your family half way through and return as you are needed in court etc or something has happened and they cancel your leave ?? This is not so much about the money as in the way we have been treated. Since 1991, I have been employed by the Met and I have never ever seen such a strength of feeling such as this. We have had our benefits and entitlements taken away from us over the years, not just by Labour but by the Conservatives as well. It is getting to the point where they have gone to far, I and my colleagues will not stand for it anymore. All we want is to give you the public a good fair service - you do not get that thanks to constant figures and stats that have to be hit which are implemented by the Home Office - all we get is the grief because of this, as the public see’s us as the face of the poor service that they are getting, they will never see the Home Office or the Senior managers who are telling their Officers to actively go out their and hit the easy targets such as motorists and kids have typical kids fights as we all did when we were young. The public don’t get to see those that make us spend hours and hours doing forms and paper work that they could stop us doing very very easily … in fact the public actually see coppers less than they ever have.
You constantly have politicians telling you that there is more Cops than ever before and there is, but the Police has changed in my time and there are more cops deployed on terrorism, firearms, and other specialist units.
The public want to see cops on the street, traffic Officers on the roads and they are simply not there - when I joined there was on average 30 Officers per shift covering Covent Garden / Leicester Square / and The Strand / Whitehall area of central London - now you are lucky if they put out 10 per shift (I’m not counting PCSO’s who cannot arrest or act as a warranted Officer can) for that same area. Is that what the public wants, no it is not. Coppers don’t do this job for the pay … yes i get a good wage as I’ve put the years in but what am I worth, over those years I’ve been hospitalised on several occasions through injuries and assaults recieved at work, I’ve been shot at more than once, people have tried to stab and bottle me on several occasions and I’ve seen things that will haunt me forever.People have mentioned our pension scheme and when we retire. Well, I pay 11% of my wages into my pension each month, I expect a good pension for that - even that has changed for new Officers now too, they do pay less, get less back and have to work at least 35 years to get it in full now.
Yes, I can retire after 30 years … I don’t think 30 years of putting up with the worst dregs of society and is too short a time or are some people suggesting that I should still be rolling around the floor trying to arrest teenagers when I’m almost 65 ??All I ask in return for this (that I do willingly) is to be treated fairly … the Goverment haven’t done this and they’ve shown it in true style now. Well, I will not put up with it anymore, not just for my sake but for those that will wear the uniform also in future years too.I don’t actually want to ever be in the position of walking out on strike as I know that that will be the day that what support we have with the majority of the public will fall badly and will never be regained. I just hope this all gets sorted out and it could very very easily by the Home Secretary admitting that they got this wrong.Barry … a very very disillusioned copper - who like the rest of us, despite how we’ve been treated, will be out there tomorrow still trying his best to make just a little bit of a difference.
I appreciate what you’re saying about morale as I get the feeling that’s what keeps you guys going when you’re working under extreme circumstances. Very interesting to get the info from the (trojan) ‘horses mouth’ for a change instead of the press version.
Before saying anything else I would like to say that I think the police should have got a better pay deal. As should our fighting forces. However, they are not the only public servants who have been shafted! The police isn’t the only job where leave is cancelled because ‘something has happened’ or a trial has been dragging on for so long you end up being called in teh middle of a holiday (I’ve found it’s easier to just not take any holiday and look where that got me!). We - those of you who know me will know who I’m talking about - aren’t getting a pay rise at all this year and the ones we’ve had for the last few years have all been below inflation rate for ‘at standard’ performers (high performers have just managed to get inflation leveling pay rises - but for high performer read ‘someone who is willing to put their life on hold as and when required’!) Like Trojan, I don’t do my job for the money, but when I revealed to a DI who I was working on a case with, how much I earned (he asked…) he couldn’t believe how much less I earned than him, especially given that I was near the top of the pay scale for my grade!Sorry rant over… but most people seem to think I work for the police anyway!
Oops … no offence meant in not including you in my never ending post.
I know it’s not just the Police that has been shafted by HM Govt but basically every job where they have some sort of control over the wages.Terrible thing to say and I hope it doesn’t happen, (those of you that remember it properly will hopefully correct me if I’m wrong) but the way things are just now, it seems to be heading the same way as it was in the 70’s - possible monster recession ahead of us, fuel prices getting stupid, pay rises in all jobs not what they should be, people struggling to pay for houses and being able to live a decent life too…Things ain’t good !
well ive sat back and read every single word of this thread and would just like to say how digusted i am of this gov’t.who in gods name brought them in for a second term?..it certanly was’nt me i can tell you!!
The police have gotten shafted beyond beleif…nurses are being stepped on(my partner is a nurse)…firefighters are being dragged threw the mud…and servents of our well being have had two fingers shoved up at them…if this aint anarchy…well i dont know what is!!!
as for bringing squaddies on the streets if the police strike?..yea…been there in northan Ireland and altho we gave bloody noses to ppl that didnt tow the line…it just would’nt work here…human rights and all that…;).(who the phuck come up with that one?)
i will vote UKIP on the next election…31 years old and i have never voted in my life…but this is a despret time and calls for despret mesures…
this gov’t need to be ran out of office pronto…as i can see a natinal revault…im surprised that the public (us that live in the Britain)are still taking it up the ass and paying over a quid a litre of fuel…wtf?..no protests?
ive said this before and i’ll say it again…i am severly getting p_issed off with seeing the country that our grandperents defended all those years ago go down the pooper and wither away…not even Hitler himself would have treated us like this…and it saddens me to say that as i look on my mantel peice and see a medal that was given to me when my grandfather passed away for duties exeeding that of a British Soldier…
let the police do their job for christ sake…let them be able to give kids a thick ear if they even speak out of turn…then we’ll see some respect around here…there was a time when even a bobby’s voice would put the fear of god into me…but i always knew if i was ever introuble…i could turn to one and they’d see me home…safe and sound…lets have that back ppls…please…
