passed theory test - Training centres for DAS in London?

Yay! I passed my theory test today:D. Next stop…DAS. No huge rush though, I’m still learning, slowly.

Can anyone recommend a training centre in London? My local one is O.K but as it’s really expensive I would just like to shop around a bit… Anything West, North or Central London, or I would even consider outside of London residential courses.

well done on the theory
I used North London Motorcycle training. Can highly recommend them

Well done  I used Premier Rider Training in Wembley. Good bunch of lads.

Not sure how old you are but you know the rules for obtaining a licence are changing in Jan right?

Congrats

Yes DAS is expensive, check out www.getbike.net

Eastside Rider are good. Passed first time with them. No minors on either test.

Another recommendation for North London Motorcycle Training. I also recommend strongly against getbike.net.

Really! I got on great there…

Why not?

I went to getbike wanting to do a CBT on a manual bike. I phoned ahead and confirmed it would be on a manual bike. I got there - and I was told that by policy they don’t let people take CBTs on manual bikes unless they are already competent riders. They spent a long time arguing me down and convincing me, using the argument of “all of their experience”…effectively they gave me no option but to use a scooter, and I accepted it knowing no better. It dramatically affected my riding - I did an automatic license (after six weeks of riding), and it took me a further six months to do a proper manual license, which is what I wanted in the first place. I later found that the reason they push Auto on CBT is that they sell a further “Gear Conversion Course” to make more money. Funny how every other bike school in the UK can teach a CBT on a manual bike and include the time to cover the gears, but they can’t…

I then bought a bike from them (scooter of course). I paid more than the book price, because it was very low mileage and had a full service history. I got home…and noticed I didn’t have the service history with it. I phoned up…and it didn’t have a service history. I heard all sorts of excuses, my favourite being “it’s so low mileage it wouldn’t have needed servicing yet” (the bike was 7 years old!). In the end they took it back, fair play to them, but why lie about something like that in the first place?

I’ve since spoken to others who also have a low opinion of getbike.

I did my DAS at NLMT - and they were much better, very open and honest, fairly priced, and did a great job of training not just to pass the test but to ride safely

Well I have the exact opposite experience with GetBike. I only did my CBT there and when I arrived I was also recommended a scooter instead of a manual bike which I booked but it was all in good faith for my safety since I haven’t ridden a bike before and as soon as I confirmed that I really want to do manual bike licence there was no further discussion.

All the guys were really knowledgeable and friendly, the instructor was great and I had a very good time including my Indian test-mate who ran into me on a crossing

I also talked to them for a while after the test about bikes and when I bought my Vara they offered to take a look at it for me to check if it’s alright (I bought an used one and I didn’t know what to look for when buying second hand bike). So all in all very good experience, I only did my DAS elsewhere because GetBike is a bit too far and they didn’t have any courses available at the time.

In the end I did my DAS at the same place as Tom, Premier Rider Training and I can recommend them as well, the course was great.

hey well done!!

some of the questions are really daft and some of them are a bugger to remember!

sorry i have not caught up with you since the other week, everything is a bit hectic, i’ll text you

Can recommend 1 Stop Instruction, but they’re based North East. Did great job, got me through everything first time. DAS ain’t cheap, but they got me through in 3 days + 2hr 1-to-1 training session. They stagger mod1 and mod2, so you don’t lose out if you fail mod1.

Avoid Bikewize, worst experience of my life - incompetent instructors.

I suggest going to a training centre that has a DVLA test centre nearby so that you learn the routes, something Bikewize don’t do until the day of your test, which means if you have an early module 2 test, forget it.

If your learning a test route then your not learning how to ride.

Congrats and I can also recommend North London Motorcycles aswel i passed with them and 3 mates also great instructors

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the recommendation, I will look them up! I’m 44, so I might be wrong, but I don’t think the new rules will affect me as I think they are changing the DAS from 21 to 24 years old min? One advantage of being ‘old’:D… I think they will also insist on taking the test on a bigger bike, minimum 600cc but that doesn’t bother me because that’s what I was planning on doing anyway.

Hi!

Thanks, nice to hear from you. What’s the news on your bike? What did the insurance company give you as a replacement?
Yeah, I am so pleased I passed. Thanks to my son actually (who sadly failed his:(). He advised me to click way more than I would normally for the hazard awareness section. I probably would have failed if I hadn’t had that piece of advice.

Thanks everyone for your good advice:). Looks like North London Motorcycle is coming up as the no1, then Premier Rider Training in Wembley but I will also look up the other ones.

Thanks everybody!
So I’ve booked a free 1h assessment with North London Motorcycles tomorrow for the DAS. I’m v v excited:D to be going on a big bike!!
Hope I do O.K and don’t drop it (I have a habit of doing this…but the riding is O.K, I just have issues with parking and stands for some reason…lol)

Not just me then… phew!

Enjoy and have a great ride and let me know how it goes:)

So I ended up being assessed on a Honda CBF125, so felt right at home! (only sat on the Suzuki R6). The instructor recommended 5 days for the DAS. I was quite impressed with North London Motorcycles and grateful for the LBers’ recommendation.
Now I’m going to just practice and practice my U turns and make sure I nail them, then book. Looks like I’ll be able to do it in November:D.
Hope to meet you soon, Flumpit, and let me know about your bike’s progress, hope you get it back soon.
