I passed the Mod 2 on the 13th April and have been ringing around about test riding some bike (new or 2nd hand) but have been told that a lot of shops insurance policies have changed and that you need to be riding for at least 6 Months before you can test
The license clause is very common now. I was allowed a test ride in Dec although I had just passed, but I think that was because I am a female the wrong side of 40 and I had my bike riding hubby in tow. (The only advantage of being an oldie :D)
You may want to go along with a mate who has more riding experience, also, you could see if your insurers would cover you for a test ride.
Nice one on passing. Yep I had the same issue after I passed my test. I bought a Hornet and the manager said I couldn’t test it, but if I had any problems afterwards he would sort them out.
What bikes did you want to test, or did you just want to test the one you had decided to buy before you paid for it?
HiFirst thanks for all the congrats and replies, Im looking for the mid-range 600cc naked bikes Honda Hornet, FZ6 or SV 650 etc I rode Yam XJ6 while training and on test
I like the tip on taking a mate with me thanks for that
What do you folks think about an SV 650K6 2007 it looks in good nick and sold by a dealer ?
I managed to test ride a 675 with just my test pass certificate the next day but had to sign an indemnity form saying I’d pay for any damage, needless to say I bought it the same day
Congrats on passing your test, now the real fun starts
Don’t know about dealers, but I’ll let you have a test ride on my XT660X, with the cash in my hand if you want as long as you have 3rd party insurance. (or leave keys to equivalent value car or something along those lines).
The bike will be up for sale in a few days. Cracking bike with all the right extras for not much money.
I’m not surprised that you’re being denied test rides with a brand new licence. The premiums on a dealers “any rider policy” are huge and they are going to get a substantial discount by accepting a few limitations.
You’ll probably do best at big franchised dealers where they get (well, they used to get) support from the manufacturers. But that’s a guess.
If you think the dealers are being unfair, try hiring a car on a brand new licence particularly if your under 21.
+1 for trying the big franchised dealers. I went out on a test ride mission the day after I passed my test and they were about the only one’s that would even consider it…
Any particular reason you’re not thinking of sticking with the XJ6, especially as that’s what you learned and passed your test on?
All about confidence. I was on a speed triple 2 days after passing my test - left my card details set up for 1000 excess though! lol
Do some research, ask the right questions, and pretty much ‘tell’ them what you’re going to test ride, and when it will be suitable for you too. When they swan over as youre looking at a bike, send them away, and let them know youll call them when you’re ready.
Talking finances with them will get the sales guys excited, but dont get sucked in either!
I had the same problem a few years back but then I went to MotoDen in Shoreditch. The guy there allowed me to test ride their bikes and when I asked him why was he happy to do it when no one else would, he said that they have some discretion and that if you turn up looking like a 17-year-old boy racer you stand no chance of a test ride. But since I looked ‘sensible’ (I was in my late 20s) and was asking considered questions he was happy to take a punt.
In the end I did not buy my bike from there as I went for a Fazer but definitely would in the future if I decided to get a Honda.
