Well after what seems ages I finally had my advanced motorcyclist test and passed. I think buggering off abroad for a few months, my observer also being a bit of a jetsetter and other family commitments meant it took a while to get up to standard.
Pretty chuffed to have passed, bought a cardigan and considering growing a tache and taking up the pipe. Anyone wants to know about the experience, I’ll be the one drinking real ale out of my own pewter tankard at the corner of the bar.
The training, if your experiences are anything like mine is very enjoyable. May be not as fast as you’d like, but still good fun! Plus it could keep you out of A&E where “couldn’t be bothered” is gonna feel a bit daft!
My experiences are, you join a local club which is a fun thing/place. You read the Roadcraft Manual and incorporate what you’ve read in to your daily riding/commuting. You then do Observed rides with an Observer to see how you’re getting on. Terrifying!
That depends on where you’re starting from. But I bet there is no one that wouldn’t benefit…
All very good points by SneakyMcc…There is nobody out there who wouldn’t benefit from more training. I didn’t quite get round to doing my IAM on the bike. I was meant to have my first observed run the weekend after my accident:rolleyes:I am already qualified to join the car section by virtue of my driver training through work. Also my father was a police instructor on bikes in the late 70s to mid 80s, and even with all their experience, they used to go out together, 4 instructors, for a ‘jolly’ every now and again, and would quite freely, without the fear of taking offence, or egos getting in the way, dissect each others riding so that they could learn from the ride…
I didnt mean i cant be bothered in the sense that i cant be bothered to be a better rider I just mean i hate tests and such. and i also need to do my HGV also but dont wanna hate test things.Having not long ago learnt a whole cpc folder and passed my cpc exams i cant be bothered at the mo with more pressure I would love to do it but not yet
Took me just over a year time wise, but 10 actual observed rides. I think the average is around 6 or 7; but early on I had too many long breaks between observed rides due to trips away and other stuff. A few members at the Kent Advanced Group would rib me about liking being an associate.
I think if you commit the time to observed rides and practicing, you can rattle through it pretty quickly. Lead time for the test is about 4 weeks at the moment.
I’ve had about 6 ORs with LAM but the last one was about 3 months ago, just been too busy each Pot Luck weekend. In light of your success I will make extra effort to attend these and get through the test, hopefully before the Spring. I might even ring up an Essex Girl
