Pain relief advice

As some of you may remember but thanks to a car door i ended up with a broken hand and needed to have two pins put in to fix it

Now its left me with a really stiff joint and this cold snap is killing me riding the bike and trying to work.

is there any good pain killers or gels i could use that are up for the job?

How about deep heat?

hi the cold does get to breaks in this weather,i use a prescribed co-codamols which are quite suttle.allso when u get breaks in the hand your tendons tend strechted and the shrink as they heel,so when u grip u get alot of pain in your knuckles.u can work them back into shape using a stress ball, this help my hand a lot:D

Wow - external fixation through the metacarpals and you’re still riding? How do you get your gloves on?

You might be better with a non-drowsy analgesic like Ibuprofen tablets as long as you don’t have tummy ulcers and risk of bleeding. Codeine compounds are more likely to make you drowsy whilst operating machinery. Tramadol would work very well, but you might not wake up when the lights turn green. Ask me how I know

cheers ive got the putty stuff they give you and been slowly forcing the joint each few days to get it moving but as its my clutch hand the pain comes back really quick.

getting thw gloves on was interesting after the break before and after the op it was hard to get it on but this was back in may so the pins are out now.

just trying to live with it otherwise they will fuse the joint.

What does it mean if they fuse the joint? :S

It means you can’t smoke it :frowning:

they cut it out put some metal in and do a bone graft

If the pain is bad, you can safely take paracetamol, ibuprofen, and i think codeine at the same time.
I had this ok’d by a doctor for a bad toothache.

8am paracetamol
10am ibuprofen
12pm paracetamol
2pm ibuprofen etc, etc, etc

Works a treat cos you’re always topped up. Check on the codeine thing, but I am pretty sure you can add this one in too, or take it with the paracetamol.

I would say speak to Kevsta but if you took what he does you’d be a space cake like him :stuck_out_tongue:

Kevsta is a space cadet with or without pills :D:D:D

Obviously check this with your doctor first…

Option 1 - take a vacation to Spain, hit any pharmacy in a small(ish) town and they’ll probably prescribe you some lovely pain killers that you can’t get without a doctor here. But topups are expensive as they include Easyjet flights

Option 2 - As Mel said, you can safely use ibuprofen and paracetamol / codeine.
When my pain is bad, I normally use the Boots paracetamol and codeine tabs - each of these are 500mg paracetamol and I can’t remember how much codeine - they are effectively the generic version of the co-codamol brand tablets. I take 2 of these, 4 times a day.

The ibuprofen is used as the anti-inflammatory component of the treatment, and I have to take 2 x 300mg tablets 4 times a day.

When things are REALLY bad, the ibuprofen has to be upgraded to Naproxen - this is prescription only though, whereas the above stuff is all available from your pharmacist.

Just make sure that you take the tablets quite a while before you plan to be riding - these things don’t just ‘activate’ and need some time to start working. There’s no point in just taking them and walking out the door to the bike

A combination of paracetamol and co codamol are proabably best. Your supposed to take them about 4 hours apart i think(make sure you don’t over dose in a day). Thats all they ever gave me after alll my hand opps.

Make sure you get a lot of fruit with this, as the co codamol has an undesired effect on your bowl movement:w00t:

Trams! Give you that edge on the ride in

thanks people ill see what my doc says on the 8th when ive got another xray and bits to do. guess ill rattle each time i go for a ride lol

The schedule i illustrated there is 4 hourly inbetween different classes of painkiller. you can mix the different types of painkiller together, as long as you dont take each one more than 4 hourly which is what i wrote here. If you do this you should write it out so you dont confuse yourself
Naproxen though is an anti-inflammatory and i would not take ibuprofen with these.

I’m on Tramadol for my back. It’s an synthetic opiate and very effective. But does have quite a few side effects. Ask you Doctor about it, but I doubt they would prescribe, but if you don’t ask you don’t get.

Otherwise I would suggest like the others paracetamol, and if you have any inflammation add ibuprofen.

ill stay away from the strong stuff ive seen what it does to you at bm and ive never been a fan of pill taking so in the mean time ill keep up the exercises and when its bad take afew tablets until i see my doc
