overtaking police patrol cars

tonight i had to collect my vfr with new tires fitted so as the weather was nice i thought i’d scrub them in a bit like you do.so i left my dads near canterbury and took the twisty backroads to Rye.no stop off and i headed up the A268 where i got stuck behind a patrol car keeping to the limits.i have no problem abiding the 30 and 40 limits through villages but knowing the road and the bends ahead i did not want to be stuck where i was!!:pinch:

leaving peasmarsh i thought feck it i’m going to do a overtake and see if they bite…national speed limit coming up and sweeping right hander with a reasonable straight, positioned wide for better view and kept distance to roll on smoothly past :w00t: i done it.to add insult to injury a people carrier infront so out of the next bend i overtook that too  and proceeded to make distance round the following bends untill i could ride normally again :Whistling:

so damn wish i had a helmet cam for this little event as i’m sure it’s something that lingers in most peoples minds whilst riding,i would’nt give it a second thought on a dual carriageway or motorway but on a A or B road hmmm you dont know till you try!

Quality! brave move.

Few years back doing about 100kph in Italy with my mate, police pulled up in the slow lane next to us in a small panda type car, put on the flashing lights and was waving us on, to crack on. We sat back and followed them for a touch than realised what they were suggesting.

Steve and I looked at each other and thought feck it, so we turned on the taps and went for it! The Italians love bikes, steve sv 1000 had just been released, I was on the r6.

we laughed about that for years! (Only in Italia!):w00t:

Don’t get me wrong, thats not the norm!

As long as you’re doing it safely and within the speed limits then what can they do. Do you filter passed police cars in traffic?

This is the correct way to do it

filter past police and overtake on motorway and dual carriageways no probs…enjoying lanes at a progressive speed and getting held up by a patrol car spoils the ride a bit just not had it happen often so last night was good to test a interesting talking point.

i did break the limit by 10mph tops to carry out the overtakes but kept it bang on whilst still in sight for next couple of corners, smooth steady and nicely planned they had nothing to frown upon

I would imagine the traffic plod quite appreciate a bit of well planned progressive driving or riding, and like others say, no rules broken (ish) so what’s the harm? probably a refreshing change for them instead of the usual chav wagon antics they have to put up with.

I have done quite a few times…

it doesn’t matter if you go say 5-10mph over the limit, from convo’s with traffic plod 70 in a 60overtaking is not an instant pull, if you look like you know what your doing and arent a twat you get left alone;)

thats a given really, filtering past them at the lights etc is not illegal, also i only really over take them in the lanes, that said i have seen others overtake old bill in a 30mph zone and they havent done anything…

I do it all the time, even at above the speed limit so if a 50 I tend to go around 55 or just under. Frankly I think they would be more tempted to stop and check you if you stick to 50mph since 50mph on your speedo is probably 47mph. Had police biker in front with a massive scooter/bike queue behind me. I was slowly doing 52 and eventually the 2 miles extra made me pass the guy and leave everyone stuck behind him.

After I passted my driving test I was told never to be stiff stick to my 9 to 5 hand actions without crossing arms etc or panic when I see police… yes nothing to hide but you get the feeling to be better than a good boy. If they see you be such a good bot they may think you have something to hide…

I say be natural and behave as you would but don’t go nuts… oviously.

No problem with doing it at all. I do it ,sometimes to see if they respond and they never do as long as you’re sensible. As for filtering again no problem, its making progress rather than making the traffic queue longer:)

I only ever overtake them sensibly…

Couldn’t help but do it today. 20 minute commute with 4 plod cars in all. Filtered past one on dashed hatchings, went passed one on the old Kent road doing 30mph dead and I kept to 35 mph or so, and then past another which was crawling along and once round the corner I gave it some beans only to be faced with one going the other way!

I reckon if you are smooth and not obviouly breaking the limits (and watch out for the short stretches of solid white line) they leave you alone, although I reckon there must have been so something else going on this afternoon.

On a bike safe thing I did last year the police rider said 10% or so over the limit is fine in order to get the overtake done quicky and you slow down again thereafter.

Just don’t give bored copper something to lecture you about :Whistling:

Yeah right. Park Lane GP more like:Whistling:
