Overheating?

Hey All

My SV seems to be getting hot pretty quickly, even on a short run of a few miles its up to 80 in no time, if i cant filter and have to follow it gets hotter, sometiems over 95 even in the colder weather.

i know its a big twin and they often run hot, but should it be getting that hot so quickly!?

the fan is not working, and the rad has a broken mount so its cable tied at the mo:w00t: to be honest its abit close to the cylinder head- could be the probelm>?-

i’m looking at getting a new rad, from delkevic, take the old fan off and give it a good clean up see if i can get it going.

hopefully this may solve it, wotcha rekon?

well if the fan isnt working then the overheating isnt suprising…

That’s nothing to worry about. If it was up at 100c then I’d be keeping an eye on it.

How bent is the old rad?

why the fan not working? wire it direct to battery and put switch in to turn it on/off when ya need.

Before you do what Choprocker suggests, try running a couple of temporary cables direct from the fan to the battery. (Leave the ignition off while doing this) You only need to touch the cable ends to the battery to check if the fan runs.

If it doesn’t the fan is u/s. If it does it’s a wiring fault or the temperature switch.

If the temperature switch is all one unit with the sender to the gauge life gets too complicated for me.

Give it a try. No point in buying stuff you don’t need.

Have you checked the fuse?

Ive been there before with a fan and its a right pain in the arse i remember waiting by the blackwall tunnel trying to get the bike to cool down before riding through it!

Check the fuse and wire it to the battery and check that it works
Check that the fan spins freely by hand, it should rotate a few times after you’ve spun it yourself, mine wasn’t so i had to replace it. Got a new one from ebay that only cost be about 15quid. Honda wanted +£100!
If it all works then its probably the temperature switch.

My immediate response was…

Ride faster!! lol

My bike will go from 0-90 while sitting idling outside my garage in about 15-25 minutes depending, I know because a couple of times I ran it during winter and that it is about how long it took.

On open roads my temp sticks between 75-85 hitting up to 95-105 in seconds when I hit town traffic.

If that helps.

An alternative way of looking at the problem is that the motor is running at its most efficient when hot and because the cooling system is pressurised, the boiling point is raised.

So you could say “no worries”. Me? I’d fix the fan. 105 degrees might be o.k. 107 might not.

Just an idea, if your rad is held on with cable ties in one (or two) locations there will be a LOT more movement in it than if it were bolted into place, could that movement have either dislodged connector or broken the connectors on the temp sender?

right…

it sounds like my bike is not overheating just running up to normal temps, out and about on the move it rarely gets above 80, tho will rise in town.

my fan is set to come on at 106, it rarely gets there as i will shut it off over 103, i’ve only seen 100+ once so far in winter, and that was stuck in town traffic/pootling behind cars.

the fan is a bit mucky, i’m gonan take it off, give it a bloody good clean, i’m also probably gonna replace the fan blades as they are 8 years old and very cruddy, i cant find an orginal one on Ebay for love nor money, and the 650S one is far too small, BUT i have found out that the blade on a CBR6RR fan are the same, the whole unit may also fit, so i’m a get one o’them:D before i do all this i wil test everything but i got a feelign the old fan blade is just corroded and crud encrusted so it wont move!

the Rad will need replacign at somepoint, its not looking its best as several mounts were broken in a crash, it still works but im trying to build the bike back up to what it was- bar cosmetics, its gonan look like a shitter and but go liek a missle! maybe…

thanks for the replies guys!
