On the London Bikers psychiatrists couch.

Would the following bug you.

I had to drill - what I think is the last set of stuck screws out of my ZX7R today - the screws fixed the front mudguard to the fork lowers - I did one ok but slight fecked the other one up - the hole is an irregular shape and is not dead centre as it should be.

  • it will be ok once I stick a bolt/washers/rubber grommet in there . .

But part of me feels crap that I fecked the job up slightly - and that even though it won’t show once the mudguard is on - I know it’s there and looks crap and wasn’t done properly. . .

Would this upset you?

It’s a Kawasaki so it won’t matter;)

 - yeah - I know I’m not restoring Mike Hailwood’s TT winning Ducati or anything! :stuck_out_tongue: But do you other guys occassionally feck stuff up like this? i guess I’ve been stuck in the garage, got a bit cheesed off and lonely and dissapointed with myself and need some moral support. . . sniff. . . :crying:

Gosh. That’s sounds really tough :hehe:

Maybe practice screwing around a bit more? I don’t know if that’s encouraging enough…?!

You could be right. . .:hehe:

you said it yourself you wont see it and its not like youll be taking the fender off all the time so relax move on and the next time you have something like that to do you should be better at it

Yes, owning a ZX7R would upset me.

dont ya just love Pete:D

:hehe:

AND it’s in bits! :hehe:

TBH - if all had to worry about on the superduke at the moment was a slightly off center hole, I’d be chuffed to bits!

I hope you remember to offset the opposite one in the other direction to even things out.

I know it seems silly - I just feel that I should have taken it to an engineering shop - where they know how to and are equipped to do this stuff properly - rather than fecking it up myself to save a few quid.

How is the bike Pete? Personally I’d feel better about damaging the bike honourably on the track - than after attacking it with a drill. . .

If this world had more people as concerned as Sid about such minor divergences from perfection, maybe we’d have been spared the second half of Billie Joe Armstrong’s career…

I didn’t like the first half of his career  - never really got Green Day. . .

Have any of you read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance? He tackles the frustration and fear of fecking things up so well. . .

Well, at least you had a go, ended up with a functional repair, and, if you’d had put a grommet on and not said anything, no-one but yourself would be aware of the slight inperfection.

I took the orange express to Jerez in wonky mode. It went like a GSXR seeking missile, as always - but the headers have split under the engine. Much like yourself I thought “adapt and survive”. Two red bull cans and 4 jubilee clips later and I was back on track.

However, on the final day the pipe split further along and a repair wasn’t possible. I shall let the pros take over - MHP being where I want to get t welded.

I should probably read that.

You should comfort yourself that you would have felt a whole lot worse if a ‘professional’ had fecked it up for you. On the other hand you would at least then be able to offload your frustration on him.

Maybe look at it as ‘tolerance’ -the byword of every craftsman. And who wants perfection anyway?

Thanks guys.

I’m sure the KTM will be as good as new Pete - you’ll probably enjoy the bike even more now it’s been ‘bloodied’ so to speak.

Thanks Lessismore - i’ll look on it as a ‘tolerance’

Like they say - the person that never made a mistake never did anything . . .

Very true ! There are things like that on my kit car, I learnt a lot building that and mostly you can’t see the odd hole in the wrong place, especially on brackets I had to make for example, as you can just move the other holes along a bit too or use +2mm screw to fill the space and to most people, they’d never see it.

I’ve had to drill so much out on this bike - it’s as if the screw metal becomes fused/welded to the component - not being able to do a simple thing like get the mudguard off to do the far more important job of removing the forks was just the last straw - I got angry, impatient and ripped the mudguard off with my bare hands so that I could make a start on the forks - and just layed into drilling it and fecked up.

I’ve got a replacement mudguard coming in from a breakers.

This endless drilling has actually been quite an upsetting experience. . .sniff. . .:crying:

I say good on you for having a go and getting a working result.
