so now A&E departments want inflatable jackets to be made compulsary.
Can you imagine if it went off accidentally whilst negotiating traffic in Central London? From normal to Michelin man in a nano-second!
Luckily it appears no-one else with any power is taking this particularly seriously!
I know, I heard that little gem on the radio this morning too.
Apparently bikers make up 1% of the traffic on the roads but we make up 20% of the accidents!

I would have thought that an inflatable jacket wuld just encourage the wearer to roll/tumble up the road instead of slide. That would then cause more limb damage potentially.
Interesting concept but not something I’d wear
I saw it on the news this morning - I have no doubt it can help with certain injuries, but how exactly would it be enforced ? roadside checks for inflatable undergarments ?
That’s what bugs me about this type of thing. It’s not enough for a group to get on the news saying – look here’s a piece of technology that’s so fab and groovy it’ll potentially stop you getting hurt. I recommend you buy it. – Instead it all has to be about passing legislation or regulations forcing us to do something because we’re obviously too stupid to know what’s good for ourselves.
Couple of issues with these…
Firstly… the canister is on the shest area… so could potentially become a lethal piercing object.
Secondly… attaches to bike via a ‘rip cord’… You are def gonna forget you are attached to the bike! So one of two things will happen - either walk off and you inflate…(meaning you have to buy/refill high pressure canister… Or you walk away and pull the bike over as you walk off…
Either way - think the rip cord makes it unuseable… How much slack would there be to hang off etc…
Would make more sense to do it on an accelerometer device (a bit like the iPhone has to judge a sudden movement… such as an impact or dramatic decelleration)…
It also assumes you won’t impact with the bike!

Having read all the replies to this post, I cant help wondering what the debate was when helmet usage was first proposed. I remember an article written about a woman (of all things, not meaning to be sexist here) some years back who steadfastly refused to where one. And the fuss created at the time.
I like the look of the “Type B” thingo on the first Video…Maybe they could be adapted to double up as a highvis jacket over the top of a normal jacket?
Would be happy to wear one as / when available when commuting.

I did laugh out loud when, the doctor said it’d help protect the internal organs, so when we croak it, at least our organs can be re-used
These dumbass jackets have been around for a few years now…its actually great fun to wait for the person wearing to get off his bike and then calmly walk up and ask ‘’ what that do then’’ and pull the cord 
Of course I will be getting my ‘‘free’’ version next time I fly Easyjet as they keep them under the seat…AND its already in High Viz orange!!!

I think its a great idea that such things are being developed - nothing new was ever perfected first time out!
No one except doctors is suggesting they should be compulsory and that’s not really surprising is it!
