On Sunday’s bimble through the twisties to the H cafe, very early in the ride, I had an “incident” - a technical error leading to me departing from the tarmac. One of the main reasons I got a helmet cam is so that I can replay these kinds of things and learn from them, to make sure I don’t do them again. Here it is:
I may or may not have failed to register that there is a corner after the summit (simply don’t remember properly)
I went over a little bit of ugly road which made the bike jump a little
I panic braked, in the corner, making me lean back up and go straight…
I went off the road and by some miracle stayed upright.
I’m guessing what I should have done was pushed right to lean over further and completed the turn. Going slower would also have been advisable, learning to read road conditions properly. This was the first ride-out I had ever lead, and I think that I was stressing too much about the others and not concentrating on my riding. This is a very valuable lesson I have learned, and I count myself lucky at the learning not being painful!
Having said that, the incident really shook me up for the rest of the ride - luckily Richard took over and lead us through some wonderful roads up to the H in time for me to order a burger
Looks like you were set up for the corner until you hit that pothole, does the scooter have small wheels? That probably doesn’t help when you hit a rut.
The trouble is, I didn’t even see the bump in the road until I watched the video afterwards! I was convinced it had all started by me making some kind of technical error. Well, I did, but the technical errors were in how I handled the recovery afterwards (breaking is a bad way to do that!).
Well done in keeping it upright and posting it up here for us all to see and discuss.
Possibly bigger wheels might of helped or less speed or different positioning on the road might of helped, all things to learn every day on the bike, main thing is you’re here to talk about it
Ok well sounds like you just arsed up the corner lol. Perhaps too fast for the amount of steering input you made which leads me to think you misjudged the bend’s severity.
something like 50-60% of bike off’s are due to rider failing to stay on correct lane crossing middle white line or grass cutting - were you going faster than you felt comfortable as speed didn’t seem fast and you had adjusted position to left of road I think bump delayed your turn in making you run wide. main thing is yoru ok - whats helmet cam as it looks superb quality ?
That is the new Contour Roam, running at 720p with 170 degree wide angle. I returned my previous Drift HD Action cam due to a number of issues, and this is the replacement. I have to say, I am over the moon with it!
I was the SD on his tail… That bump he hit did kick his back wheel up in the air . When it came back down he got a wobble that was the entire frame of his scooter flexing . On that scoot he did bloody well to keep it in line enough to stay out the hedge . Also his back wheel was performing incorrect cos I had not fixed it at that point .
As I was behind him I came through hit the same bump with both wheels leaned over feathering the brake watching to see where it was all going to end up and as I had a proper bike it never so much as twitched .
I blame his scooters flexing frame . Small wheels and fly wheel fault .
That’ll learn ya. Scooters  Decent suspension would have sucked that pot hole up nicely. I was kind of expecting to hear screaming and a real close up of the hedge I’m taking my cam on the way home tonight; let’s see what happens. Thanks for the vid!
