Can any one tell me how many Emergency stops there will be in the New practical test in October?Just a bit worried. When talking to an employee at a dealers he asked if I planned to take my practical before the October change and was describing the changes. He made it sound a lot harder. One thing he mentioned in particular worried me a little. He said the new test has 2 or 3 emergency stops in it. Is this right or is he trying to scare me?
My concern is that when doing my CBT I did the emergency stop no problem, in truth I loved it. But next day had trouble moving my right arm. A trip to the GP reveled (don’t laugh, alright you can if you want) a torn muscle in my arm pit. Sounds funny I know but it was really painful. It was 2 weeks before it healed. I have had trouble with this arm since it was broken and dislocated years ago in a RTA. It would be good to know what to expect, although I’m not sure what I can do to prevent a repeat injury. Any suggestions?
Take all this with a grain of salt, buuuuut… As far as I was aware from some reading I did for a friend who’s considering doing it later in the year there’s still only 1 emergency stop, and that has to be from at least 50kph (31mph - Same as before). This is done as part of the Off-road assessment, and there’s no longer a requirement to do an emergency stop during the road ride.
There’s also a “controlled stop” which needs to be done as part of the off-road assessment - This comes just after an avoidance test, and supposedly whilst a little tricky too, it’s not as harsh as the emergency stop.
As far as recommendations - Whilst it can be quite hard to do on the smaller bikes, try and grip the tank with your thighs/knees to avoid putting too much weight on your arms. It makes general riding a lot easier, as well as giving you more control (And putting less pressure on your arms) during braking.
Hi :DOk 1 Emergency Stop and 1 avoidance, that don’t sound to bad, guess that guy just wanted to scare me.
More knee grip thats a great tip, a bit like horse riding. I can do that, well I could when I was a tad younger.:hehe: Much happier now about it. I’m going to try and strengthen that arm a little to. It can’t do any harm. Thanks guys.Jenny
