Poor bloke has probably been misquoted etc etc. He is right that the “English” accent is disappearing from our streets, particularly in London and other cities. I’ve lived in and around London all my life and I feel like a foreigner walking around parts of town.
Personally I don’t care who lives here so long as they respect our laws in the same way that we would be expected to respect theirs. 2 years later I am still awaiting £4,000 pay out for bike damage and compo for my hip injury thanks to someone of eastern european origin not understanding that you need Insurance/Tax/MoT/Licence in the UK to drive a car…

He’s got a point imho, in the sense that we’re not particularly proud of being English. Not in the same way that, say, the Scots or the Welsh are. I’m really happy living in mixed, multicultural England, but I think that one of the unforseen outcomes of the (neccessary) laws brought in over the last generation or so to protect incomers against racism and discrimination, is that people are wary of saying positive things about England. The English flag, in my living memory (I’m late 30’s), has been used more by skinheads, NF, BNP, etc than by any other group, so I can understand why mild-mannered Joe Publics are wary of using it and/or promoting Englishness for fear of being branded racists. When he makes the point about Germany having a definite German identity, I imagine he’s chosen Germany specifically because of its similarity to England in that it’s a country with a lot of immigrants. I think there are probably a decent amount of things which a visitor would see as “British”, and plenty of things which would be seen as Scots or Welsh, but not many which would be seen as English.
Almost everyone I know can’t understand me, the most english people I’ve met are on this forum! People always ask me where I’m from and are amazed when I say London, England,…the follow up question is always ‘what, were you born here?’ uh-huh! lol.
It very much depends where you are in the country. You don’t hear so much English accent in London, but you go t’up nort’ or dahn sarf a bit you get plenty of English accent.
London isn’t a fair representation of England in terms of accents.
And if anything I just wrote upset someone, that was completely unintentional, I mean no disrespect to anyone.

I agree. PC fools have stiffled the debate. Polticial Correctness is for stupid idiots that live in an idealised fantasy land that doesn’t exist. Racism EXISTS, crime exists, drugs exist, the glass ceiling exists, inequality in society exists…but everyone running round with their fingers in their ears hoping htat “being equal” means everything’s ok are so EFFIN stupidly naive and deluded, they don’t deserve to be spoken to, listened to or even taken seriously. In fact they need to be robbed at gun point, evicted from their nice middle class homes and sent to live on nothing for a few months so they can see just how hard life is for most people and stop being such snobs just cos they had a lucky/wealthy start in life.
