Has anyone got any info on going to NY? I want to take my wife for her 30th birthday prezzie, so any tips on cheaper accom and flights etc would be appreciated. Prehaps you know somone living in NY that could rent accom to me? any info would be great… thanks guys n gals
What lovely pressie!
Last time I went to NY was September 2001 just before 9/11 and I stayed in a Best Western hotel; it was approximately half an hour from the city but way cheaper than central accommodation. Think I paid about $100 a night however, that’s room rate, not per person.
Go on a boat trip to statton island (well worth it) but give Century 21 a miss as it’s reminiscent of TK Maxx, only worse! Head to Bloomingdales instead.
Cheers firestorm… I,m taking notes
I can’t help on advice, but the last time I went to NYC, I had a ball, it’s a really cool city with so much on offer. You can spend ages going from one length of the island to the other, going up towers (shame you can’t do the trade center anymore, but the Empire has an amazing view of the docks and city), cruising the shops, dining in the diners and restaurants, exploring central park and perhaps venturing into the residential areas further north (Bronx, etc).
I went there in April and got a late deal with Expedia.com, flights were with Virgin Atlantic and we stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel which was central to everything. Advice take lots of money to spend, which my wife did !!
Hope this helps.
Cheers people, still taking notes, so anyone else feel free to offer advice

If so, can I meet her???
No no no, her name is Monday I have seven wives, one for each day of the week…if you think shes hot you should see Sunday, corr !!
im here in NY (sands point, nassau) right now visiting my family for the next few days celebrating the new year
from mid jan, flights are very cheap. £200 return on BA.
check out travelbag.co.uk, ebookers, airlinenetwork.co.uk where they sometimes have offers, but ba direct is very competitive.
its colder there in jan then it is here!.
remember to pack a travel adaptor and a wooly hat-getting cold!.
make sure the wife hasn’t planned anything or she’s not having an affair and book away
go to see the WTC (or whats left of it) and stay away from high rise buildings and if you see any guys with beards on the flight, get off!.
a parachute might be handy.
if you’re hiring a car once there then best thing would be to get out of NY centre and stay in places such as Motel 6 etc in the suburbs- anything in the city centre is going to be relatively expensive.
usually cheaper to fly to Newark(NJ) than to JFK.
personally, i think car hire would be an unneccessry expense. NY is a nightmare to drive or park in.
staying in newark is a good tip though, is cheaper and only a cab ride through the tunnel from all the action.
take her to “chumleys” (an old Speakeasy 1 block away from where the exterior of “friends” was filmed.
also “McSorleys Alehouse”…a fabulous old bar full of victoriana etc.
good luck.
Somehow I think if I continue this conversation, I wont get to see friday, let alone sunday.
Check out the link below, it gives a comphrensive listing of the all the hotels , the location and rates in the manhattan area.

Also, make sure u guys catch a broadway show, cheap last minute tickets are available at the little kiosk in the center of the traffic island in Times Square, shopping at saks, macys, bloomingdales, check out chinatown for imitation soccer jerseys for all the major leagues (your wife will go ga ga over the gucci, chanel purses) and stroll around central park, staten island etc etc…avoid the subway past midnight though especially the line going towards bronx
Nice one people, keep the info coming, i’m still taking notes
The place sounds awsome
