I have a K8 SV650sport. It has 6k miles on it. I needs 3-400ml of oil every 500 miles. It’s not smoking, I can’t see any leaks, and it’s only started doing it since the 4k service. Has anyone else ever had this? Am I worrying unnecessarily over it’s oil consumption? I’ve never owned a bike that needs as much oil as this (well except the Bandit I just got shot off, but that had 40000 miles on the clock, and I could see where the oil was falling out of the engine).
Shove a bit of sawdust in the sump and flog it?
That’s rather a lot of oil it’s hiding away somewhere.
you didn’t serviced it in a Triumph garage by any chances?
My SV needs fairly regular top ups (done 38k) - particularly if it’s been on the motorway a lot - the oil level in the sight glass usually drops by about a fifth (from the upper marker on the sight glass) every 500 miles or so - the engine seems healthy etc. It could be a charachteristic of the bike - e.g. my mates speed triple seemed to get through a lot of oil - and as for the 675!
seems a lot, perhaps its a twin/triple thing dunno not put a drop in my 'bird in over 3k, oil change due soon mind
Johnse1 - have you got an email addy I can use? Got some stuff to send you.
PM sent - thanks
Cheap oil maybe…
The cheaper crap thins out and so shows less in your window I’ve found.
BUt you should be changing it every 2k Ish anyway…
The dealer I use was fitting Putoline oil in my ZX6R which was being lost somewhere so i bought castrol Power 1 Racing last service and that’s far more stable, I suspect because it’s got better high temp stability and isn’t evaporating. Engine is also quieter with it.
I think that’s right - a cheap oil evaporating - and if it has a lot of use in central London/town then engine temps are often going to be on the high side I’ve always stuck Castrol GPS etc in mine which is an ok oil and haven’t found oil loss problematic.
Since joining this forum I have been amazed by the number of people with high oil consumption. It’s insane the amount of oil some bikes use. I have heard of bikes running out of oil before the first service! Have bikes got a deal with the oil companies? 30 years ago they were spilling the stuff all over the place and now they are burning it or evaporavating it off.
I check my oil every so often and in nearly 28’000 miles I have never put a drop in.
Quite shocking really.
OK…
I do most of my journeys on dual carriageway, with a bit of town work at the end of my journey. Almost all of my journeys are outside of rush hour, so there’s not a lot of sitting in traffic. The oil I use is Silkolene semi-synthetic, the same as the Suzuki dealers who service the bike use. So I don’t think either using it for town journeys or cheap oil are to blame.
I think I’ve established that the oil useage is unusual, so when I get a moment off from work I’ll be popping down to my Suzuki dealer for them to sort it out.
this is your best bet
Keep us posted - Hope they sort it + it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with.
In 15k miles my Bandit 1250’s oil level hasn’t fallen at all, and I check it very regularly. Reading this thread I was starting to think there was something wrong with it (or I was reading the oil level incorrectly) until I read Kevsta’s post
that’s honda for you though:D never topped up my last 2
My 600 Bandit didn’t use a drop of oil until about 33k…and then it started using more oil than petrol:)
I’ll hopefully be popping down to the dealers next week to sort out the SV
