Need to learn to ride again...

Have just gone from a 500 to a 650 and it feels different in every way - more acceleration, lighter handling, an all round more sporty feel.

Problem is, I am now having issues with cornering. The engine braking that used to help me slow a bit is non existant with this bike, meaning I’m going into corners too fast. And the drum brake that was so nice and gentle has been replaced with rather sensitive discs, making me wobble when applied rather than provide more control.

Can anyone give me any tips on how to handle my new beastie? :frowning:

just keep riding it really… after a while you will have gotten used to the new engine characteristics and the brakes.

btw what did you get?

Did you go from an inline 4 cyl 500 to a V twin 650?

I’ve only ever ridden IL4. a vtwin is supposed to have more aggressive engine braking! And more torque in general esp in your case I expect.

So it really is about being more smooth. I’d guess you stopped thinking and switched into autopilot on the 500. Wake up! and open your senses to the new bike. Dont expect the bike to behave like you were used to, expect to learn from it. Start planning much further ahead and be smooth like silk with the controls. I reckon it will take months, not days so just be extra patient and vigilant.

Your muscles and senses have to retrain, so what Pan said keep riding and rubber side down dude!!

ER5 to ER6n - so nope.

Good points about having to get used to it, but I’m worried that while I’m doing that I’ll stack it!

I’m trying to take corners slower, and lean and steer more than I did, it’s just the stuff I used to do to get me out of potential trouble doesn’t work anymore. I actually had to stop in the middle of a junction the other day cos I had such a wobble on. Felt like a right tit.

hmm an er5 to er6 shouldnt be that different… like Ban said take it slow and easy.

also try active counter steering (i.e push&pull) than leaning more.

Just keep practising your corners - remember slow in - fast out. Slow in means that you have the time and composure to get your gears, positioning and braking just right to put you in an optimum position to accelerate out of the corner.

Slow is the speed that you personally feel comfortable with. Going into a corner at a speed that makes you feel uncomfortable (in other words too fast) will tense you up, you’ll end up braking and slightly panicking and consequently you’ll completely muck up the corner.

That’s why I’m confused!

I think a big part of it is everything on my old bike was worn in and comfy and this new one has a lot less miles on it, so it’s all shiny and tight.

Do I really have to go slow? :frowning:

no but you need to be smooth  (i meant slow in term of input  )

Taking corners slower and leaning more sounds like a recipe for disaster…

Also check your tyre pressures. You’d be surprised how much of a difference this makes on your ride if they are not correct.

+1

Amazed how different the bike felt when i had a slowy !

This bit is worrying, I would say.
Why stop in a junction? Where’s the wobble coming from? When you brake? Too slow? Too fast?
Hard to know what advice might help unless you give a bit more detail on that point.

Without knowing much though about the engine braking I’d say you’re possibly using the gears on the ER6 in the same way as you did on the ER5. You’re perhaps changing up too early for the engine to have any effect when it comes to easing off the throttle. It’s carrying too much momentum. But it’s a bit of a guess. Try not changing up a gear as you used to.
