Hey,
I’m from Ireland, living in London for the last 18months.
I work for LAS.
Living in Tooting but based in Ilford.
I normally get the tube but during this summer it will not be feasible as the journey already takes 1hr15min without surge in population expected this summer.
Also, my tube passes through the Olympic City…it’ll be a nightmare.
So I’d like some advice on what to do bike wise?..
I have a full uk car driving licence.
I would love to get a large moped or small 125bike.
It would only be for 3/4 months so can’t justify spending loads.
Any idea on where to get cheap run a rounds in London?..
Also I’m home in Ireland until June 10th…bikes are cheaper here. I can get Aprilia RS125 for about 450pound…do you know what the law is regarding driving Irish reg in London, I assume there is a grace period and I wouldn’t need an MOT?..
Any healp or advice greatly appriciated… thanks for taking the time…
you will need to do a CBT, costs anywhere between 85 and 150, look around, this will allow you to use a up to 125cc displaying “L” plates.
As for a cheap run around, you have come at the wrong time of year bikes and scooters increase in price this time of year (not to say there isnt anything out there), however depending what you get you will likely be able to sell the vehicle when your done.
Very true sir and thanks for your advice…
What I mean by where to get one is literally where?..
In Ireland I know the sites, gumtree, donedeal, local paper, etc.
In London I’ve only seen gumtree and pistonheads(which is expensive)… any other sites I should know about?..
Thanks…

Once you have got over the CBT hurdle (does that apply to an Irish person with an Irish licence or does he fall under the rules “back home”?) look for a very unpopular bike and just put up with being embarrassed riding it. It’s only for a couple of months. O.k. Three.
Honda C90 Cub is a good example. It’s just basic motorised transport sold in millions as third world transport for family and/or goods.
I’m sure others will suggest more bits of basic sh*t that change hands for a few quid once you’ve found them.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT GET A CHINESE IMPORT, YES THEY ARE CHEAP BUT AFTER ALL THE REPAIRS YOU WILL DO TO IT YOU MIGHT ASWELL BUY A BRAND NEW BIKE, plus they are a pain to sell!!
If you were visiting from Ireland or another EU country, you could drive an Irish/EU registered vehicle here for up to 6 months in a 12 month period.
However, as you’re working over here you’re classified as a UK resident & it’s therefore illegal for you to ride/drive any foreign registered bike/car in the UK.
Also, there’s no such thing as a cheap RS125, at £450 you’ll just be making a deposit on your (near-)future repair bills…
