I think it depends on how long, and what the weather is like also, hitting 135mph and braking isn’t going to hurt, but riding say 60 miles doing 110+ when the wind is against you takes a toll.
bit of a curve ball but you thought about something like the yammy tenere or ktm 690?
for one tour a year you’re better off on something with fairing - your gixxer out of the question? or you could just man up and deal with a bit of windblast… Just stay away from the motorways and speeding is risky anyways, you won’t be doing +90 for prolonged periods of time… or will you?!
OMG…you’ve only just bought the Gixer…why are you thinking of getting rid??
I’ve got the Bandit 650 as my commuter and as a commuter it is superb. Fuel consumption is brilliant and it is almost as manoeuvrable as the little scooter commuters. On the exposure to the wind question…having ridden both faired and unfaired bikes to work (everything from GSX-R 1000’s and Fireblades to FZ6 Fazers and SV650’s), I can say that in winter you definitely feel the difference between faired and unfaired. Without a screen you definitely get a lot colder a lot quicker…that is pretty obvious I think.
For that reason this year I have invested in an MRA screen for the Bandit and so far the difference is very noticable and makes any motorway riding 10 times better.
In conclusion naked bikes defintiely make the best commuters, they can be much more fuel efficient than sports bikes, but definitely benefit from a screen for winter commuting and long distance work.
HTH
p.s. You could always look at something like an F800GS that really is a do it all bike!!
No, I lost my licence when I was 21 and it knocked me back a good 3 years financially so I do not sit there for prolonged periods at licence losing speeds - I just don’t enjoy it panicking about the plod.
The idea is a bike that is a laugh, looks good and potentially more fun at lesser speeds. To get to the fun part on my gixxer (about 10k rpm in 1st) I am already doing 70… if I have fun in second I am well into goodbye licence (I have only just got it after all!)
Regarding the lack of fairing, I am managing to convince myself that I will have comfier wrists and knee’s with the riding position so will be kind of a trade off on that?
The gsxr is being made into a full time track bike. It really isn’t a great road bike (I prefered my CBR otr) and I have been on the look out for something comfier with more torque.
I only commute on a Friday into oxford street and wont be doing that prob dec/jan. Helpfull info regards a screen though, will probably get as big a one as I can (can sacrifice looks for a few months of the year!)
F800GS is a great bike, but I really want something that still corners like a sports bike…
Street Triple. I get 140+ out of the tank. Not that thirsty - it depends if you have a heavy wrist. Downside easily nickable in London and the smash and grab raiders getaway bike of choice.
Better made than the Suzi 750, more useable power as well.
But the Hornet is the best bet. As Pan said good ones from 04/05 less than 2k these days.
I started with a Hornet (600) and then got wiped out so bought a CBR 600 with the pay out. I loved the Hornet but fancied a faired bike. I had that for a year but bought an FZ1 about three months ago. In my opinion the FZ1 is a lot faster, better in the corners and a lot comfier. I commute into and out of London everyday (60 mile round trip down the A40 then into Fenchurch Street / Bishopsgate) without much of a problem. It is easy to get through traffic and loud enough The number of near misses I have had has drastically reduced as well due to the improved riding position.
I can get about 120 miles out of it now i have stopped riding it like it is stolen and can comfortably sit at 90 mph on it mile after mile without any discomfort (but i do weigh about as much as a small horse!!).
At the weekends it is brilliant for a blast and stupidly quick - i can’t get anywhere near the end of the power band either. I am looking forward to taking it to Wales though and giving it a proper go.
cheers ashton, the FZ1 like your avitar is one I am definately keen on. How do you find the low down power, as although it is a “detuned” R1 engine, at 150bhp I imagine it to still be quite peaky power wise?
The Gixer isn’t a great road bike?!?!? In what way?
I’ve ridden Gixer 600’s/750’s and 1000’s, to commute to work on and go for sunny blasts both locally and further afield and they are certainly capable of those tasks on the road admirably…
Is it worth taking your Gixer off the road for one day a week commute and not riding through winter (you can add February to Dec and Jan, it is just as bad if not worse).
Also no naked bike is ever going to give you that “plugged in” feeling to the front end like a sports bike, because of the difference in geomtry, handle-bars etc. Don’t get me wrong, naked bikes can still be ridden fast, but if you are looking for sports-bike handling from a naked bike, you won’t get it, unless you buy a cafe racer. The Street Triple is probably the closest to your requirement, but it won’t be the same.
Just keep the Gixer…it is perfectly capable of doing all the jobs you can throw at it…and if comfort is an issue, get some rear-sets and a db-screen…sorted.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Bandit for commuting…but in your case I don’t think you need to change.
It can be a bit slow on the pick up off the lights but you get used to it - once you have ridden it for a while you get used to the bite point and then it flys. It will do 80 in first which is probably a bit too long but i have heard a lot of people say Power Commanders are a waste of money.
Get an aftermarket can - the stock exhaust sounds rubbish and weighs a ton. I swapped mine and i get better MPG out of it and people hear me coming.
hmmmm it comes up in the group tests of what I have been looking at. Would worry about the reliability aspect of it. Certainly attractive bikes (runs off to redo insurance quotes)
