Im new to biking so my knowledge is limited and I am slowly learning as I go.
My bike starts with the choke fully up.
I left it for 10 minutes to warm up. keeping the choke up.
Then lowering the choke half way and riding the bike after about 2 minutes the revs start to drop and then the bike just cuts out.
Second scenario…
Start the bike up with choke fully on… over the course of 10 minutes or so… ill slowly lower the choke until its all the way down… or almost all the way down.
The bike will either loose the revs and cut out as I lower the choke… or… It will cut out after riding it for a few minutes. I then have to wait 10 - 20 minutes before it will start again.
Am I doing something wrong ? or is there a problem with my bike ?
what the choke does is adds more fuel into the fuel/air mixturei think your leaving it on for two long, try turning it off after a few minutes and let the bike warm up with out it,and dont ride with the choke on.if the bike cuts out when you turn the choke off try holding the revs up with the throttle
this may sound silly but are you sure your opening the choke and then closing it?
are you thinking your starting the bike with choke but actually starting without and then using choke thus cutting out.
yrs ago i got hold off a cg125 been sitting for yrs but i cleaned it out carbs etc and started up str8 away then as i though was closing choke and it was stalling, i was doing it wrong way round, lol.
didnt need any choke to start up in the first place, aarrggghh
No I am certain I’ve got the choke the right way around, the guy in the garage gave me a lil demonstration.
Im using the choke to start the bike simply because it’s so cold. I was advised that on a warm day It wouldn’t require the choke to start
The bike idles very high with the choke up and as I lower it the idle slowly drops.
just currently its dropping to the point of cutting out.
Cleaning the carb ? something I could do myself… or preferably at a garage ?
Either your idle speed needs adjusting or you need to clean the carb like Trackday Junkie says. Did you run it down to an empty or almost empty tank of fuel?
You could do this yourself to save a few quid it’s not too complicated… Have you taken a carb off before?
Just give it a clean with white spirit and blow through it. Use a needle to unblock the jets but do it gently.
Remember where the jets were if you unscrew them.
If you run the fuel to empty it can pull all the crap through from the fuel tank into the carbs…
-petrol tap off
-drain carb (should be a screw right at the bottom of the float chamber - just loosen it a bit the petrol should dribble out)
-disconnect carb connections eg fuel pipe, throttle
-remove carb
-unscrew float chamber (bottom part - don’t open the top!)
-you should see two jets. Not sure about your carb but they look like brass screws with holes in. The central one is the main jet (controls fuelling at higher revs) and there should be a smaller jet as well. this is the pilot jet that does the fuelling for idle speeds.
-Unscrew the pilot jet COUNT THE TURNS IT NEEDS TO GO BACK IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE
-clean the jet with a needle to remove any blockages. soak it in white spirit first and blow through it/hold it up the light to check it’s clear
-reassemble. remember to turn your petrol back on!
Not worked on these bikes though so anyone with better knowledge please correct me!
Cheers, I’ll see if I can get a couple of more experience friends to give me a hand. Might take me a while to get round to it. But i’ll give you guys some feedback on how it goes.
and if anyone has any other suggestions please do tell.
Not familiar with your bike but…Does the fuel tap have settings for on, prime and reserve ? Thought maybe it’s borderline between on and reserve and simply runs out of fuel. Try it with tank on reserve. Once again it’s hard to fault find like this but if it has been running fine up til now best check the simple things first before taking it appart.
Isleworth ? Good to know. Sorry its taken me a while to get back to this. life hasnt worked to well lately.
The carb needle was stuck which was the problem! so anyway got it back up and running again.
but now ive got a petrol leak… again… this time not from the overflow… It just pours out whenever the fuel taps on. streams down the side of the bike and runs down the stand…
any more suggestions ? taking the bike to a garage tomorrow to have them take a look at it. So hey wish me luck.
and again. thanks for all the help you have all provided. its much appreciated!
