hmm I wonder if they have spotted the flaw here. I’ve been nabbed for not paying the charge a couple of times while working up in the smoke, I forgot to pay the damn thing. Now everytime I’ve had the letter its always had a piccy of the offending motah with the reg plate. Not the whole motah just the bit with the reg plate. Now the flaw with regards to bikes is that the piccy is always the front, without exception. Don’t quote me on it but I’m pretty sure the cameras take a piccy of the front and not the rear. Can anyone clarify this?
It would probably cost too much to fit rear-facing cams in the Con Charge zone, but some bright spark will simply introduce parking charges for all the overstuffed bike bays soon! Time to dust off the pedal-powered autogyro, methinks…
Im sure Ive seen congestion charge transit vans with roof mounted cameras so these would probably work whichever way your going.
About once a week 1 of these vans sits in Charlotte Street clocking people but Ive never really looked what way the camera is pointing though - I’ll look next time i see it
Er! Isn’t that article over two years old, refuted by TFL, and rubbished in a letter I have from Ken Livingstone?
BTW TFL is responsble for the charge, but isn’t responsible for the motorcycle bays so can’t charge motorcyclists for using them.
This is a 2 year old article! It’s one of those stories that won’t go away and unless they put the money up for camera to pick up a rear plate - or (more likely) Sat tracking then it’s not going to happen…
How can the government justify hitting motorcyclists with the congestion charge? Its named " ‘Congestion’-Charge". Motorcyclists dont congest…
The thing is , we all know that the whole Congestion charging thing is another greedy government money spinner. Just like their parking attendents. We kind of know the ‘coo’ but put up with it as they gift wrap it, by saying it helps with congestion… If they then start to charge vehicles that DONT cause congestion then theyre BLATENTLY bending us over… AND NOT sticking to the original speil about congestion and are obviously showing us that they can do what they like and how they like when they like and dont even need to give us a reason… Or even stick to the original story… What next??? Congestion for Bicycles,pedestrians, PIGEONS??? Its a joke! ! !
It is the same as when they decided to charge the public more for owning a 4 X 4 claiming that they emit more pollution than other modes of transport, thus ruining the ozone layer…but in fact they have found in studies that a Mini gives out just as much pollution as a 4 X 4 and they don’t get charged anything extra. Go figure! It is a complete and utter joke! All that they have achieved is to encourage 4 X 4 owners to pave their green gardens and turn them into parking bays to avoid the extra charges levied. How is that good for the environment? :
They would charge for air if they could get away with it.
TFL and Ken said at the time (2005) that as bikes did not cause congeston there was no intention of charging them - so why raise this old red herring again?
Maybe no Con Charge for bikes but it’s only a matter of time before the boroughs start charging for bike parking…
A spokesman for the Greater Manchester congestion scheme has stated that bikes will be charged for entering their zone when they implement it up there, so don’t be suprised if it rolls it’s way out from there.
