My MOT is due on the 25th of February, which is 3 years since the date of first registration (can you believe I’ve had it longer than I had the CB500) anyway I don’t plan to come out of hibernation till March so will it be OK to let the MOT expire so longs as the first time it comes out it’s ridden to a pre booked MOT and service at Chiswick Honda? Or is there a minimum grace period after the MOT expires that you are entitled to do that?
Logically I’d say there’s a grace period, but I’m not sure…
Also in regards to getting back on it with no mot (and I’m guessing no tax) your safest option would be a van or walk it as there is soo much confusion on here about it,
No mot, it can be ridden to a pre-booked mot
No tax, it can’t be on the road for any reason… (But many will argue that)
I’d say call the local police station and enquire…
Or dvla…
Best of luck
Buy your new tax before the old MoT expires. Then ride to pre-booked MoT station.
March is only 4 days after 25th February, just wake her up early.
Check your insurance docs to see what it says about cover when the MOT has run out. I think the small print on mine says you need valid tax & MOT.
they get funny about trying to renew tax within a month of an MOT due had this before and was refused road tax had to hurriedly get an MOT done at the time. Feb ride to your local MOT station won’t kill ya just pick a half decent day to take it - think you can do it up to a month before its due and have the date as per the Feb date. Happy to ride it for you to local station for a fee
Have a read here…not sure who runs the site but interesting stuff.

Dunno what that site is but you are covered by insurance even without MOT specifically so you can have your bike retested…
See here.
Insurance companies have to cover the Road Traffic Act so you are covered on the way to an MOT (and back if you need a retest)
Policies normally state that bike has to be ‘roadworthy’ so as long as the bike hasn’t got busted lights and no brakes you will be covered - mind you the bike may not be roadworthy even with an MOT…
What happens if the bike has failed tyres at the MOT and you need to ride to the tyre fitters I don’t know…
Joby, a vehicle can be ridden/driven without either tax and/or MOT only directly to or from a pre-arranged MOT. The MOT centre must have your registration in their booking to confirm the arrangement. Your insurance does cover you for this.
If it fails, you may only ride directly home and return from home directly there again for a retest. Riding to a.n.other garage for repairs is not permitted.
Keep in mind that any MOT is only “valid” at the time the test is conducted, technically. Although there is a 12 month date on it, you could ride away and have a tail light bulb blow and the vehicle is now unroadworthy,
As long as you have insurance you can ride the bike to a pre booked MOT even if dosent have tax then if fails straight back home
Thanks guys. The tax and insurance will still be in date by then. Good to know there is no rush to get it out if the weather is still bad. I’ll make sure I’ve a pre booked MOT appointment at Chiswick Honda when it comes out of hibernation.
Joby,
I’m with Mark on this, many insurances will not pay out if the bike does not have a valid Mot… If some scrote nicks it, whilst the MOT has expired etc.
Alternatively get it mot’d when due.
