You can either take a under 1.0L car or a 125 motorbike. Of course I’d go for the bike option! You have 4 weeks to make it from England to Mongolia through any route you choose for a huge party at the end.
Yeah, I just did a few calculations. It will take 7 hours of riding per day at average speed of 50mph for 28 days to do 10000 miles. It’s gonna be hard to keep that average speed once you hit dirt tracks, especially if we were to try it on C90s.
Might have to be car or van, or if enough people are up for it a car with a couple of bikes…
just had a look at the link to the C90 you put up and its made me want to do it on one of them now!
only downside i can think of (although its not quite a downside when relating it to fun) is spares. could carry a few more essentials in the car.
had a gander on the mongol website and the earliest to sign up the team is in sept, just after this years run sets off. im thinking get the position booked asap, then worry about what to take.
Definitely, at least once booking fee is paid your not going to want to drop out!
I did a quick check on costs and all inclusive of booking fee, charity donation, bike cost, fuel, food, flight back and visas it should cost about £3000.
The charity donation can be fundraised and it is £1000 minimum per team rather than individual so total cost will come down with more people in the team.
That C90 is nuts, I can see myself working on a little project like that next winter and spares shouldnt be a problem with the C90 - over 60million sold worldwide!!!
I take it that cost is per team?
according to the rules money over the £1000 donation can also go towards the journey providing those that sponsor know this, so again the cost could come down.
according to the site with good PR work you could end up doing the journey for free!
Ive done a few trips before - Month in Argentina with 8 day trek through the Andes and 6 day canoe through the Amazon for free simply through fundrasing so it can definitely be done
That £3000 would be for one person doing it by motorbike. I was quite conservative on fuel costs - guestimated 85mpg at cost of 95p per litre.
coolio.
well i’ll reappear on this thread end of aug/early sept time (prior to the entry needing to be submitted). and in the meantime i’ll keep my eyes open for a pimptastic C90:cool:
Hi all, I have just registered on the site as I am looking into doing the 2011 Mongol Rally by bike and found this thread on a google search.
I was thinking of going the “old CG125 with knobblies” route.
Herbalrick, Vala, are you still planning on taking part next year?
Martin, I would like to get the benefit of your wisdom at some stage about taking part with a bike (I recognise your username from Horizons Unlimited).
I have not discounted the idea of the rally, but as I am currently applying for university for next year I’m not sure if it is an option for me any more.
Martin is currently on his way to Bahrain on the London-Tbilisi Rally, but I’m sure he will shed some pearls about the mongol rally once he returns
Cheers Herbalrick, post on here if you do decide to enter for next year, good luck with Uni anyway. I 'll see if I can catch Martin when he’s back.
@ megroovy… Your mate went in an Imp?.. You’ve got to respect that choice of machinery! (I was thinking entering with a CG125 would be hard enough, perhaps I might have underestimated the lunacy of the other entrants!)
