Mayor Boris - Bikes in Bus Lanes

Now that Boris has won I hope he keeps to his word on allowing bikes to use bus lanes in London. We will see.

His transport policies - http://www.backboris.com/policy/transport/index.php.
Can’t see anything about (motor)bikes or bus lanes.

edit - spelling mistake! :w00t:

Politician keeping his word? Where you been?

(Politicians promise is a known oxymoron.)

“seb wonders if the last person to leave London could please turn the lights off”!!

Short of pestilance, war, famine or plague, I don’t think there is much danger of London being emptied.

The danger might be that the Chelsea tractors start multiplying, still being driven by the mums and “bright young things” (another oxymoron, I must start a thread going on that) and decimate the bike, cycle and pedestrian population.

Anyway, with the way energy bills are climbing, who can afford to leave a light on?

I hope the blonde buffoon does allow bikes to use bus lanes (come on BMF/MAG/MCN, start lobbying the man!) but I won’t hold my breath on it. After all, as some wise old chap once said…“If voting was able to change anything, it’d be banned!”

He mentioned it in MCN weeks ago. MCN published this today,

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/mcn/2008/1-4/1-4/may0308borisjohnsonbecomeslondonmayor/

must be true if it comes from MCN;)…hahahahahaha

he’s rich man orientated…the commoner will suffer…you mark my words…

smiled:D.

And the (motoring/biking) commoner has been sooo well treated by the egotistical little political turncoat?

Let’s just wait to see what the blonde guy manages. We can always give him the boot next time round and show that Londoners can be truly independent when we’ve had enough.

I don’t have the email with me at work, but I emailed his website when he was campaigning and got a reply confirming that he will allow m/bikes to use bus lanes.

How long this will take is another guess.

I don’t know if it’s a decision the Mayor can take on his own or whether it’s actually down to each individual council or whether they need to pass some sort of legislation.

HOPE HE DOES I ANYWAYS USE THE BUS LANE

The Mayor has control of TFL Red Routes from what I understand, so hopefully this will be tackled soon. I’ve sent off an email asking for a time frame on this being implemented. Hopefully it will be a case of where London leads others follow.

Ah the bitter sweet irony of being let down by your elected representative…

I never realised how naive people were until I watched this schlock horror play itself out…

Have you nutters ANY idea how long it will take Boris to get bikes into bus lanes… just cos you voted that blundering chump knacker into power doesn’t mean he can now decree that bikes can go where they please… that’s despotism, not democracy… let’s see how many “investigatory commitees” and councils and research groups we have to go through before he can “make a decision”, then we’ll get the appeals from the bicycle lobbies to stop the decision, then we have to watch him appeal to the bus lobby and get their views, then there’s getting the money for the sign posts, then there’s fighting for actual legislation that takes into account the views of all the lobbies above, which will have to be rewritten a few times before everyone’s happy… by which time, Ken will be running again to get back into power to undo all the idiocy this toff has done…

So funny… so so funny!

I voted him in for a whole host of reasons, the bus lanes thing would be a bonus, not critical. You need to learn that democracy is a case of the majority voting for who they want in power. Turns out it was not Livingstone, but Johnson. Get a grip on life and stop sucking sour grapes. Johnson is in power, he will do what he sees as required to get London moving and viable. Livingstone has said he will support him and indicates that he will work with him too. So at least he is carrying out his love for London in a useful manner. Sour grapes does no favours for anyone.

As has been said the Mayor only controls the bus lanes on TFL roads, which is basically the red routes. All other roads it is down to the local authority. Some allow bikes already like Kingston, some like Lambeth would probably let hell freeze over first.

Before bikes get into bus lanes he will need to revise all the various traffic control orders that ban bikes from bus lanes which will involve soem redraftign by lawyers and then going through the relevant legislative process (hopefully nothing too involved but there will be time limits built in and posibly compulsory consultation). Presumably there are loads of these orders for each bus lane. He then needs to get some mean out there to paint bikes on all the bus lane signs. This will cost so he then needs to find some money. I would be very suprised if anything happens before this time next year.

We know all about that from the batsrad Ken Livingstone, that’s why he’s out Toby

Ken is dead, love live Boris :D;)

I know, that’s why I’m not sour. I just think this sort of thing is hilariously daft… you must have heard the expression history repeats itself?

This government’s rubbish, I know we’ll vote for the alternative, yay we got he alternative… oh, hang on, this governments rubbish… and so on…

oh, and I don’t eat grapes either, I prefer pears.

by the way, I’m only adding to this topic continually cos it annoys macp…

RED KEN! Down with that toffy nosed ponce Boris “the Spider” Johnson! Booo

Power to the people! Etc., etc., etc.

Does it?

It’s more than a Mayoral decision so you might be waiting a while.

Just like how they have done with the green advanced stopping boxes on the road (well the law is currently passing through parliament), the powerful cyclist lobbying groups will make enforcement of buslanes more than likely to continue I’m afraid.EDIT: Thanks for pointing that out earlier Toby in your own inimitable style.
