Making Fairing Glue From Acetone & Lego...anyone comment on this?

Yep gotta 4cm crack in fairing nose (luckily it didn’t split completely there is still about 8cm uncracked)

So I hear about Acetone & Lego glue…

ive tried alsorts of glues & stuff alike but so far J-B Kwik Weld Professional Epoxy Adhesive has proved the best

I used this on my fairing over the weekend (after the badger attack) & I stuck the loo seat back last night

so far the fairing is hold up with no signs of fail & I need to do the hugger next which has more loads placed on it

stb mrs wise hasn’t txt me to say the loo seat broke again yet !

If its styrene or abs, use plumbers cement. It bonds rather than glues which is what you’re after. I worked in plastics for a while, and I regularly repair fairings with waste pipe. I did ‘how to’ on here a long time ago :wink:

polypropelene is the tough one, you can only plastic weld that. (yes Rosso, I’m on it… :wink: )

Scorch how can I it’s styrene or abs - Ducati 999 … ???

It’s often stamped on the rear side of the fairing. Failing that I usually find an ‘inconspicuous area’ of bare plastic and drop a blob of acetone or plumbers cement on it. Wait a few minutes then scrape it off. If it’s eaten into the plastic it’s ABS or styrene, if it peels off like chewing gum then its usually PP.

Im doing a couple of fairings at the moment, you can see how the cement has melted the pieces together. The black gloop isn’t glue, it’s the dissolved edges of the fairing.

There is a fairly easy way to tell what type of plastic it is, which is a burn test.
A bunsen burner is usually used but anything will do, really.

It is helpful when you need to know if something is ABS or an ABS/polycarbonate or ABS/PVC blend.

ha Ha!!! I have worked in the theatre industry for years and a fire inspection is part of the licence requirements for every production, and yes, the council walk in and hold a lighter to the set for 30 seconds and then take it away, if it keeps burning you fail.

I had one show passed by the council, and hours later walked back into the theatre to the smell of smoke, the council guy had failed to pat out the smouldering cloth he had tested and the fricking thing had smouldered almost entirely away, then someone moved it, it got a gush of air and nearly burnt the fricking building down!

In the US they lighter test EVERYTHING, I stood and watched the NYFD hold lighters to a bookcase made of class 1 inch ply for a minute, guess what, it didn’t burn.

so yes, the way to confirm that something wont burn is to try to set it on fire! :smiley:

I wasn’t seriously suggesting you set your bike on fire- however, if you have a crack then you might have a piece of the fairing that cannot be used in the repair.
That is a good candidate for the burn test if you need to figure out what sort of plastic it is.
Burn tests are the established way for material scientists to determine the type of plastic if it is not known.

True that, one of my first polymer chemistry lectures at university was identification of polymers.

I was expecting to be using mass spectrometers and electron microscopes, I was given a Bunsen burner and a list of smells that plastics make when burnt :ermm:

thats how the test it in my industry as well. they set fire to a little piece of fabric and see if it goes off by itself, if it does its deemed fire resistant. like 100% cotton or 100% silk etc.
