Made the mistake today of travelling west as the Sun was setting.
100% vision to zero in the turn of a bend. 80mph to zero almost instantly (and I may have soiled my pants). 
I’d forgotten how dangerous low sun can be.

even then it can catch you out, ii had teh opposite teh other day, going through an a-road tunnel with my cousin riding pillion, dark visor on, entered teh tunel could see much at all! had to concentrate on th white lines, and lean it over a bit more…funny!:P:D
I know exactly how dangerous it can be. 4th Feb last year I wrote my bike off due to this exact thing.

I too hate the low sun.
Use a helmet with instantly available internal sun visor, saved my bacon more than once. Caberg, Nolan and some others do them. You can sense when it’ll be needed just before the real need arises, worth every extra (actually very little) penny.I really used it on the North Circ today - it’s oh so true that visibility goes from 100% to zero in an instant otherwise.They are also great in the heat and sun - clear visor up but sun visor down. Best of both worlds. 
A few times recently I wished I had my son’s Caberg with the internal visor option.
Funny time of year. Found myself wearing the shades under the visor more often as the days lengthen but the sun’s still low. Shades help, but you still end up squinting and hoping.
Just try to avoid doing that while squirting at the same time.

I can’t imagine ever riding without an internal tinted visor. When commuting in all weathers at all times all through the year it is invaluable. Carberg do open face, full-face and flip up versions.
Low sun caught me out a few times in (I think) December when we had a few sunny mornings - my daily commute ends up in Lisson Grove (NW1) and in the mornings after turning into there I literally had to go into 2nd then ride with my left hand forming a visor over my eyes = pretty scary :blink:
I do have a tinted visor (road legal) but at the end of a long run it wasn’t as clean as it could have been which just added to the problem. I found it easier to lift it and squint through streaming eyes. :crying:
Thanks for the Caberg advice. I don’t want to buy another helmet as I’ve recently spent too much but I think I may try adding one of those dark strips to the top of the visor.

BTW, the other advantage of the Carberg flip ups is that if the sun is low and your speed is less than 50 you can flip up the front and it acts like a sun shade and still have the tinted inner visor. It is invaluable in summer evenings.
I find the Caberg in flipped up mode bloody awful. Reminded me of riding in an open face Bell with a peak (whatever one of those was) back in the …er.
Tried the graded sun strip at the top of the visor many years ago. Worked pretty well at lowish speeds (commutes) when you could afford to duck your head look just below the dark bit. Not good at speed when that’s not such a great idea.
I currently use graded shades and a londonbikers.com sticker as a sun strip. Ain’t perfect but pretty good. I think I might try for a Caberg*again for the next helmet.

Many folks use a narrow strip of black gaffer tape across the top of the visor. Quite a handy remedy under most circumstances but won’t help if the sun is right on the horizon and you’re heading straight into it. Stop for a cuppa and wait for it to go down!
i have 2 helmets. for commuting early or late around sun up sun down i use my Shuberth S1. With visor i can just pull down when needed.
For playing at weekends i use my Shoei XR1000 and carry a clear visor
had the same problem (except at 40) half way through my DAS test last week, could hardly see a thing and i was wearing sunglasses to boot! :w00t:
mentioned it to the examiner and he claimed to not have had a problem at all, liar, but a nice bloke as he passed me

Yeah I was alright, just broke my hand and had a hole in my leg and wrote the bike off. :crying:
Lack of experience definately came into it somewhere but it was definately low sun as the main problem, went from full vision, no problems, car way ahead of me, no signs of anything about to happen, to no vision at all, slowed right down, about to pull in and then the car that was way ahead of me was stopped in the middle of the road, about to turn, so swerved and went over the back of it!
But these things happen, four weeks later, as soon as my cast was off, I got a bigger, faster bike! Some of us just never learn!
As mentioned somewhere above Nolans are fairly good too. Cheap and has an external black half-visor which flips down when needed on top of the normal visor to help with the sun. Really useful although I’ve always been tempted to remove it altogether for the look. Haven’t done much on the motorway with it but it seems ok at speed as well…
Shame visors don’t have that reactive glass they use in glasses that automatically increases their tint as the light gets more intense. Would probably be prohibitively expensive though…

It was worse for me !.. I was the one that got the phone call from the hospital just as i was about to neck a a pint of speckled hen on a ‘sunny’ sunday afternoon in the local beer garden. Had a 700 mile round trip to lancaster instead
