The french attitude to bikers is different, we are not seen as dodgy outlaw scum there and I think the moving over for you to pass is not always just out of fear. I remember riding as a group at 8am through a misty french village on the way to le croix when an old french lady stops, turns and waves at all of us with a big smile, you will have to travel the length of Britain to get that happening…
Gentlemen, if you want to purchase/justify a loud can, do so. But you don’t have to do it on the grounds of safety.
I am sure it does make a difference, anecdotally. However, I have been passed by plenty of loud cans and not known it until it would have been too late. I’ve also sat in nice, safe cars that are sealed from the outside environment (gotta love that German engineering!) but I’ve never heard a loud can over a not-quite-so-loud can - can’t says I’ve noticed the difference.
Still, the important thing is the illusion of safety.
I rely on the old tooter to make cars aware of my presence, but the b*ggers don’t always notice, or care. A nice race can does sound rather delicious though.

Totally agree with loud pipes. You can hear the firestorm coming a mile off. OK, maybe it’s a tad on the loud side but not too offensive and car drivers certainly hear you.
I live on a new residential development which is quite busy but I’ve never had a complaint about the pipes. I paddle the bike down the road for 30 or 40 yards, then start her up and go as don’t want to annoy people more than I have to. Also likewise if I get home late at night, bike is switched off immediately.
I have a GS500 witha nexxus exhaust, its really loud for a 500 and also rough sounding… I have seen most of the other 500’s (and i use the word seen because you cant hear them at all)… When im filtering, a couple of blips if i am unsure if the driver has seen me of take the revs to 9kish then roll off and the rumbling is loud… My exhaust is ****ed where it connects to the downpipes and i even have a good ocndition original GS500 exhaust but i am reluctant to fit it because it will be so quiet…
And then theres the hooligan in me that loves all the looks
She must have know that you were forein and just make sure that you get wherever you were going as fast as possible and then went back from the hell where you came from…
Villages are one thing, Paris and any major French city is an other… And fear it is, I am scared of bikes when I drive in Paris…
And I don’t scare easy! Only girls realy managed to do that… Realy horny one that is…
