Locked preload adjuster

I bought this Ohlins shock used and it had this locking pin on the pre-load adjuster.

The unit does have a remote adjuster, but as far as I understood, this has a limited range and the adjuster on the main body is used for major changes.

I need to reduce the pre-load because it’s wound right up and the handling is affected causing the rear of the bike to be really choppy.

Any idea why this was done and how I can remove the pin.

I was told I would break the shock if I tried, but want a second opinion.

what are the static and loaded sag measurements? what makes you think its the preload?

A picture would help…

the preload collar can only be moved with the spring removed from the shock. these are set to a predetermined height. without knowing what your static and loaded sags are, you dont know if the spring is the cause of your problems. i suspect it is more than likely damping related, unless the spring is way out for your weight

Ok cheers…I’ll find out, but I’ll need a couple of helpers

I do know the spring is rated at 10 Nm.

I’m going to experiment with damping settings until I can set the bike up properly.

why dont you just bring the bike down and do it once, do it properly??

If you’ve bought this ‘used’ you can’t be sure of it’s history so without doubt i’d say your first port of call is to get it serviced.

Then before you fit it make sure the ride height adjuster at the bottom of the shock is set to give you the same shock length as the std one you removed, this will be a good starting point to start your set up.

Then as Matt rightly says, get the static, then rider sag checked to confirm spring weight is ok etc.

Once you’ve cocked it all up give me a shout;)

Ahem…
