Lexmoto 50cc electric start ... Part 2

Are you absolutely sure the starter motor is turning the engine over?

There might be no spark because there’s not enough power for it once the starter’s loading the generator.

and not just freely spinning where it sits

the spark is there you have proved that by kicking it over both a kick & electric starter spin the engine over you have no spark when trying electric

which goes through the loom & CDI

running a live direct to the start does away with the loom & CDI your just spinning the engine over

if it starts you know where the fault could be

Right I’m going to explain this is COMPLETE laymans as I don’t know all the specific names:

Previously I took the covers off to expose the starter ‘head’ and the gearing within.

I applied the electric start and the starter moved ‘across’ engaged the bigger gearing, and spun - thus turning the bigger gear … make sense?

did you check to see if the piston when up & down

Nope and I can’t remember if it did …

Another action for me to do …

Yes please

Does the starter motor turn the engine over?

To answer this you need to check for some internal engine movement at either the crankshaft, camshaft, piston or valve gear etc.

if the piston isn’t moving the starter sprag clutch is probably poo

and we don’t like “poo”

there easy to change

If I was a gambling man I’d now wager the starter motor isn’t turning the engine over

How much?? LOL

Direct link of battery to starter motor = starter motor ‘starts’ and, through “hand on engine casing test”, there is movement within. Is there a more reliable way of testing?

Take the spark plug out and stick you hand close to the hole

If the engine is turning over then something will be expelled from the exhaust or, to be sure to be sure, as above, whip a spark plug out. If the engine is turning over you’ll clearly hear the four strokes inlet, compression, power and exhaust that is suck, squeeze, bang and blow without the bang if you prefer.

It’s a 2stroke

Two strokes suck squeeze bang and blow too.

That’s suck and squeeze then bang and blow

Okay … engine is turning over with a strong exhaust ‘pop pop pop’

Do a check across the coil to see if it’s getting anything

Wise
That'll need a dismantlement ...... not tonight !!!
