Leaking Oil?

It has come to my attention that my commute bike started leaking some oil. Didn’t do that before, could it be that I am riding it too hard? Or maybe the engine is throwing oil in the air box and that’s chucking it out?

Tried to take some pics so feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

Have to trace the source of the leak.
Clean the oil marks off and see where the leak is coming from.

Might be a gasket??

Have you got a chain oiler fitted (Scottoiler?)

Mine produces a leak very similar (same place) that baffled me for ages.

It turned out that it was the oil fling from the chain concentrating around the front sprocket
area. After a commute, it would drip down from behind the sprocket cover…
because of all the dirt it picked up, looked just like engine oil…

Agree with LL’s comment…that’s how I found mine. Gave the whole area a good clean
and then checked after a ride until I saw the build up.

went and had a look at it again, looks like a lot more is coming out, I remembered also that I topped up the oil on it the other week, wonder if I did a little too much and it is chucking it out. I am hoping this is it, looks like it is coming from somewhere higher and it is leaking around the engine, but it is engine oil from the look and smell.

Just check the dip stick/Oil gauge and see how you have in it, don’t think it will chuck it out as you have the oil cap on, right?

Clean it up and then idle the bike for about 5 mins, see if there r any leaks, if not ride it for about 2 mins and u should be able to tell where its coming from

If you over filled it, it may well becoming out of your breather hoses/pipes. How much have you over filled it by? over filling can be as bad as running it low, and if you have over filled by much you should drain some off

Common thing with 600 diversions is the crank breather getting blocked.
There is a large breather from the crankcase on the RHS (IIRC) and a small breather from one of the cam cover bolts - both go to the airbox. You can get a blockage in the breathers which results in oil in the airbox and can see oil being dumped out the of the breather hose when the bike is stopped.
Whip the tank off and have a look in the airbox.Disconnect the breather hose from the crankcase and blow it through (you can use a footpump with an airbed attachment)do the same for the small breather tube from the cam cover - if you see manky stuff coming out that looks like the product of a TB ward, that’s your problem. The crancase breather can become crushed and twisted, too - a fix used by some owners is to replace it with garden hose (honest !)
Also worth checking the cam cover gasket is seated correctly, and also check the oil cooler. The female boss on the oil cooler where the banjo screws in can crack when the banjos are over-tightened and you get a leak that way.I bodged an oil cooler off a GSX750 onto mine, mounted with cable ties (threads are different for the banjos, but I used to be a fitter, so am an expert in bodging)
You can actually remove the oil cooler (if you want to do this, drop me a message and I’ll let you know what to do) with no problems - the earlier diversions didn’t have a cooler and run fine without it - the rest of the engine is unchanged.
Also worth checking the carb heater hoses (not sure if the model you have has electric or oil carb heaters) if they are heated by oil…

Looking at were the oil is it dont look like the gasket

hopefully overfiled and blocked breather

good luck

The leak could be anywhere, TBH - oil moves all over the place when you’re riding and it can be a pain to find the source.
I would bet a half-chewed pasty that the breather is blocked.Every late model 600 diversion with an oil cooler that I know of has had this problem.
