I had a good evening out at the Ace and was on my way home. I was on the approach to Blackfriars bridge and felt my legs getting a bit warm. It Seemed like the rad fan was on but, it wasn’t…
so, I looked down and saw that my bike was on fire and there were flames all round my legs :w00t: I quickly pulled over to the central reservation as was in the outside lane at the time, put the bike on its side and ran across the road and rang the firebrigade ( I was worried the whole tank might go up). While I was doing this and watching it burn a guy ran out of a shop opposite and chucked a bucket of water on it which put it out. I couldn’t thank this guy enough
The fire brigade turned up and made sure it was out properly and a Bike copper arrived. So, thanks to them too.
I am now wondering re. insurance etc. thankfully I’m 3rd party fire and theft, but, have never had to claim before, will call them in the morning and see what they say, if anyone has any tips especially for a decent garage that may be able to sort out the bike in the se London area, it would be much appreciated…
Thankfully I’m okay and hopefully the bike will live again
Sorry to hear of this fella
being that it was on fire I’m sure the insurance company will write it off
best thing to do is wait till later and give them a call and see what happens
How old is the bike
maybe you should write to the manufactuer ans see what they have to say
Glad nothing nasty happened while you were still on it. This morning ring your insurance up and explain and they should get the bike picked up and they will take it to a garage to asses what happened.
Hi everyone, thanks for your messages. Have called the insurance company and as you said they will pick it up on Monday and take it for an assessment. From what I can see at the moment (only managed to look at it briefly this morning) It may not be too bad, so, fingers crossed Some melted seat plastics and a new Tank are defo in order though as well as some pipes and wiring, but, will have to see what the assessor says. Ginger, fyi its a 99 ZX7R…
And no, I’m gutted I didn’t take a photo as hoping that’ll be the only time I ever see my bike on fire
Just to clear my conscience about not checking at the Ace, and possibly save the insurance company not paying out…just go and check the fuel tap wasn’t set to ‘prime’
Cheers Alex, As far as I’m aware the tap only had on/off and reserve - was always set to reserve, the dial however melted completely in the fire and the AA guy had to scrape the melted bits off to try and turn the tap off, so, should be fine I guess…
