Knocking Noise

Err…worried.

got a knocking noise in engine. Pulling clutch does nothing so Im dreeding the big end…

whoops…

any help???

a knock or a ticking?

maybe you figured out how to start that big single in the end  :stuck_out_tongue:

No idea myself, but maybe drop Adz a PM or give him a call.
He’s rebuilt a few KTMs

Although I thought the LC4s were pretty bullet proof?

i thought they were too… :ermm:

Its a knocking, kinda like a big end knocking around down there. Not sure if its that…

I will PM adz as soon as i got 5mins

+1 for Adz!

It might be just cam-chain noise.

Could that be more in line ‘if’ the oil was left to go a smidgen low???

oh dear, we had to rebuild a 525 engine recently, the main bearings had gone. ££££:)

Does the noise stop when clutch in?
my guess is valves. Btw oil always better a bit low than high

No does not stop when clutch in. Bugger sticks.

scared its gonna cost me ££££

Its not that loud, i just noticed it, its not been there all along though.

Can i ride it still???/

Bullet proof … hmmm wish someone had told mine it was bullet proof … 15000 miles and it had decided that was enough despite bulk purchase oil filters and best quality 40 odd quid a bottle oil done every 1000 miles .

LC4’s bullet proof…Do me a favour!!

No single cylinder is bullet proof. They all need engine work after a while…I used to have a DRZ they are meant to be low maintances etc. They get to about 15-20k then start burning oil…

Where is the noise? Top or bottom of engine?

If your finding it hard to tell grab a big screwdriver stick the tip to the engine and put your ear to the handle, you’ll hear the knocking better and be able to find if its top or bottom by putting it to the top then the bottom ofcourse, or vise versa, lol.

If its to the top id guess your tappets need adjusting. If its to the bottom id be worried.

Dont ride it untill you know the problem

Well…Thansk Adz for the call. Sorry life has been very busy for me to even to return call. Sorry.

Sunday teh weather was too good to not go out for an hour. Topped up the oil  Ran it for a few mins and the knocking noise has quietend slightly. Not totally gone and now im convinved the sound was there all along! Annoyed.

Went out and cruised around with mel on the blade, the bike didnt miss a beat. Had a few good twisites that i enjoyed too. The ‘noise’ stayed the same. Did around 80miles. Maybe I think Ive got more money than i have as it could have ended very badly.

Was it there all along? Who knows. Tomorrow ill look into it a bit more with me screwdriver and hammer

Adz: ill be in contact soon reagrding its 10k service. Once the pennies have been saved and not spent on fuel and sex toys

So back to square one: Was the noise there all along?

A&7: Apologies brother, been stupidily busy but will get that stuff over to you. Mucho luvo

i’d say likely the noise was there mate, my 660smc was a bit like that too sometimes i thought it sounded different but aslong as its not bad clunking noises then fook it:)

Drop the oil and check 19mm screen and 13mm magnet bolt to see if there clean. if the oil is still good then pop it back in.

Yes, i know exactly what you mean :Whistling:

Its not a loud knock/tap/flutter, just drew my attention. Ill ride it like i stole it (true knobber) and if it blows ill walk to FF every Sunday!

Check this points.

Kick starter rubber stopper is holding the lever, mine made a rattling noise cos of that being lose.

x2 exhaust spring eye washers, i had a spring rip thru one of them making header pipe loose.

Also check brackets holding engine, not very likely to be loose but worth a check:)

Also have you recently fitted a sump guard alloy or plastic? they make things so different esp the alloy ones

Ah cheers thanks. Ill check it out. Def a knock, very consitent, very constant. Ill check them all. Still loving the SM!

No sump guard. Try and pick a second hand one up and powder coat black
