Kettenmax - just a gimmick or is it any good?!

Just came across this thing called Kettenmax, which claims to clean and lube your bike’s chain mess-free. Watch the video here:

Anybody used this before? I’m not sure if it’s actually worth using something like this, but I hate cleaning/lubing my bike’s chain, so anything that makes it easier and less of a chore would be fantastic.

Looks like (from the video) a great way to clean an already clean chain

I’ve seen similar things before and heard good things about them, but I’ll stick with diesel, a toothbrush and Wurth dry chain (not the wax) lube myself, it works on the bikes too!:w00t:

It’s very good, yep!

I use diesel in mine! Not paying over the odds for spray cleaners, it lets you use anything you like with the bottle attached.

This is like 10 toothbrushes, all in the right place so you don’t miss any bits

Again you can use any lube with it. This is where I probably differ from what’s shown in the video, I don’t use the Kettenmax any more to apply the lube as I found it just mixed with the diesel and got washed away/too fine a coating. What I now do is get rid of the Kettenmax, properly dry the chain and swingarm, then apply lube.

Thanks for the advice Alex. I thought that it might not give off enough lube to properly coat it but the toothbrush cleaning thingy looks like a great way to get into all the nooks and crannies without too much effort. I also like that it neatly transfers the cleaner into a cup - no more mess

does it come with the cheesy music?

Agree with all you say except the above, it may use several toothbrush heads but they all work on the same plane, you can’t work it into the side plates or especially behind them.

It’ll do as a quick method but I’ll stick with the old girls toothbrush for the real deal :stuck_out_tongue: Better still for the price of a soft link take it off and give it a total immersion oil bath.

Ian

I hope so!

They do go in different directions, hard to see on a pic but try to see here:

I agree it may miss the inside of the side plates…but so would most people using a toothbrush!

I’ll pass on the soft link unless someone can prove it’s as safe as a permanent one at coping with 100+ HP on a regular basis :stuck_out_tongue:

Is the ‘Get-geared’ one the same as originally shown, it looks to have more brush options? In which case , yes it looks well up to the job, might well invest in one, might work out cheaper in the long run, especially as I always seem to need a shower and a good scrub after cleaning a chain

When I say soft link I’m referring to the one you have to fit with a riveting tool, not one of those manky split links:ermm:

Anyway some smart-arse will be along soon to say a Scotoiler is better still :doze:

Ian

That’s exactly why I’m interested in this! I can’t stand the mess it makes and scrubbing oil off the slabs in the front garden. Even with wearing plastic gloves, I still find a way to get it my hands dirty :hehe:

Hands! You are clearly an amateur when it comes to getting messy:D

Oh crap, how do you insert an image:w00t:

I bought the Kettenmax cleaner last year and it works well. After the first couple of uses, it can still get mucky, so you’ll still need rubber gloves. And I’ve found that I get through the clean/lube aerosols quite quickly.

Cleaner can be either WD40 or Muc-Off’s product. And I use loads of it.

Have tried the chain wax lube (after cleaning) but it’s not so good with the Kettenmax, because you need to spray it into the ‘box’, so I use normal lube, something like Silkolene Chain Lube.

The Kettenmax tubes and straps are a bit finicky and the rubbers on mine have perished, but it still works well by using big cables ties to strap it together over the chain. Then cutting the cables ties afterwards.

All in all, I think it’s the best way to clean the chain without taking it off the bike.
Also check out this Muc-Off plastic contraption, even though it looks more flimsy.

two toothbrushes taped together on the handles bristles facing each other and paraffin works for me …

not even going into the wd40 discussion

hmmm old large cardboard box opened out under bike or a cheap platic tarpaulin/dustsheet saves any mess on patio

barrier cream on hands before commencing and a good pair of latex gloves .

Great idea, why have I never thought of that :w00t: Nice one!

have used this device for a couple of years now
saves a lot of mess and hassle, not cheap but recommended
