Kawasaki ZX6R B1H top end service

Afternoon All,

Went by my local Kwaka dealer Saturday just gone, they told me £200 just to check my valve/shim clearances, F**k that, seeing as i’ve done all mechanical work on my bike thus far, i got the Haynes manual out, has anyone here done this service for themselves ? I’d be interested to know how you got on.

ta

no!! but have you tried FWR??? they’ll probebly tell you how to do it!

FWR ???

they are very good and helpfull

nice one, cheers.

i’ll give em a shout tomorrow afternoon so any advice is still in the memory banks come the evening when im arm deep in grease and nuts and bolts :frowning:

I think that £200 is mostly just time taking the bike to pieces to get to the valves. Still steep though, for valve clearances alone (and nothing else), it should be more like £75.

I’m always slightly bemused when costs are quoted on this forum for ‘checking valve clearences’…does that include any adjustments that are required ??.
I’v never put a bike in for any repairs [ apart from tyres]and consequently have always done re-shimming myself and would say virtually anyone should be able to do the job as long as they follow the manual.
fishface set the cam/valve timing up on the zephyr last time i had the top end off so it must be pretty easy :stuck_out_tongue:
Talking of which, her 125 cylinder head is going back on over the weekend so she will have some tappet clearences to do…

NO ITS NOT FF…ITS ZETH11…[she’s not that clever]

i am clever enough to spell ZEPH11 right though :stuck_out_tongue:

have a go at it your self dude and you will see why its 200 quid…

200 quid is steep if no dajustment is needed, just checking them is about 2 hours work or so… say at 50-60 quid an hour.

if you need adjustment the cams have to come out to get to the shims… this takes a bit of time…

your bike rattling them?

its developing a distinct tap that i can hear at idle, it is due a service but i do everything i can usually. thinking of selling the bike before our Silverstone trackday anyway.

Does it ‘tap’ when cold or warm (or both)?

when i start her up, but dont hear it so much once up to 50*C and above

i got a J2 model, taps hot or cold. Getting the valve adjustments and shims done over this weekend. See how that goes…

personally i wouldnt worry about it mate my bike rattles a bit cold.

its a good motor…

even if you blew it up a second hand one would only be 3 or 4 hundred quidz…

I wonder why they stopped putting the shims on top of the buckets?

They were a lot easier to change:cool:

i think the on bucket shims came out now and then

screw and lock nut is easy!!

theres a lot to be said for simple engineering

Sounds to me like the clearances are out & it’s time for adjustment.

When cold the clearance is more than when warm as some of the clearance is taken up by expansion of the hot metal parts.

Right i know its not a B1H, but I got my 2001 ZX6R J2 back today

Valves were too tight, worn some shims out…all been replaced and valves reset.

The ticking is still there. The guy who did it is a Kwaka main dealer Lloyd Cooper mechanic, done at home address.

He stated it was a good example. Just that the casings are light on these bikes and engine noise is rather loud.

The bike is more smoother and really accelerates now. Hope this reassures a bit?!

Oh and…

Valves, shims, chain tightened, and carbs rebalanced-£90…

I already done the oil, oil filter and spark plugs myself. My guy lives in the Hemel area…
