Its coming, dont deny it...

Downer topic yes, but be prepared is what I say, so i place myself before the wisdom of LB’ers wide and far and request information on clothing suitable for the long, cold, dark winter months. I have no intention of storing my bike up unless its snow/ice. So…

What Waterproofs?
What about “undergarments”?
Neck and chin protection?
Thermals or not?
Gloves?
Anti-Visor misty thingies?
Tips for keeping dry/warm

Anyone as brave/stupid as me? Your thoughts please friends.

What Waterproofs?
Aldi cheapo textile stuff is more waterproof than my Hein Gericke stuff. For real downpours I use a Spidi “Safety Lab” all-in-one.

What about “undergarments”?
Nothing special.

Neck and chin protection?
Nothing special.

Thermals or not?
Just the liner of the jacket…

Gloves?
Aldi again…

Anti-Visor misty thingies?
If your visor isn’t anti-mist to start with, consider the Oxford stick-on ‘double glazing’. Cheap and very effective.
Tips for keeping dry/warm
Muffs and heated grips. These two alone make winter bearable.

What Waterproofs? all in ones are good but fiddly to get on (think large babygrow with velcro and zips)

What about “undergarments”? mountain / walking base layers work well

Neck and chin protection? definitely - I have a thinsulate one, but will be getting a windstopper this year

Thermals or not? base layers - more comfortable than traditional thermals

Gloves? waterproof and insulated - I have HG ones that were good but need reproofing - also have heated grips now (which are FANTASTIC)

Anti-Visor misty thingies? they work well - pinlock if your visor has the clips or you can get self adhesive ones (The Bike Shop in Faversham stocks them - someone asked me before but I can’t remember who)

Tips for keeping dry/warm - lots of layers; a big fleece over the top of leathers is better than one underneath; and windstopper garments are really good. Depending on your leathers it may be better to get a set of textiles for the winter.

I’ll only stop riding if theres snow/ice, rode in the snow last year but it didnt really bother me if my CG hit the deck (which it didnt) - I’ll just be wearing what I wore last year before I bought the GSXR so thats some cheap dirty camo pattern textile trousers, Bering textile jacket with fleece over the top and some warm gloves, I personally never really got THAT cold but might treat myself to some heated grips

If you put heated grips on your GSXR you may be banished from the gixer rider community - personally I think it’s worth it for toasty hands (but I’m a wuss) :stuck_out_tongue:

Ha ha but Im hoping to get some decent enough gloves not to need em - did without em last year so no reason why I cant this year!

Any recomendations of waterproof & warm gloves?

I used one of those thermal neck tubes aswell last year, that came in really handy

There’s more windchill above 60mph :stuck_out_tongue:

I just wear winter over trousers, Alpinestar winter gloves and put the lining back into my jackets.

i havent took my winter gear of yet im still waiteing for summer!!:P:P

Missed one day last winter (bit of white stuff!) normally wear inner glove liner but i’ll be looking at some winter gloves this year, thermal ski wear from sports soccer (only about £12 a set) and a fleece under the jacket, foggy neck tube, oh yeah extra thick sox!

Gosh, why should you stop riding in a british winter - it’s almost as warm as the british summer, LOL!:hehe:

What Waterproofs? I wax my leathers, thus rendering them waterproof.
What about “undergarments”? Tights/leggins - Oxford do good leggins
Neck and chin protection? scarf - wooly sort.
Thermals or not? In february, maybe.
Gloves? Of course, the best you can afford, but I always end up buying wind muffs and heat grips every year.
Anti-Visor misty thingies? Nah, washing up liquid on the inside stops water droplets forming.
Tips for keeping dry/warm … Make sure all skin is coveres, especially where the cuffs on your coat/gloves overlap. Buy some good quality socks - the most important thing is to keep your toes and feet warm and dry.

As long as you stop and warm up if you are shivering, and you remember to pay careful attention to the road surface (ie, looking out for Ice/damp) you’ll be fine. The best bit about winter riding is all the fair weathers idiots leave their bikes at home, making it a much better community feeling between bikers on the road.

Also, don’t be a hero. If it’s too windy/you’re too cold, don’t be too proud to know when enough is enough.

I always ride, summer or winter. There’s only 2 things that stop me…snow and galeforce winds. I can’t bare the thought of sharing oxygen with all those colds and flu’s on the train…bleagh!

:D:cool:

I don’t really notice the winter…

I just keep wearing leathers and if it gets cold I stick a jumper under or over them…

I did buy some thermals to go under, but I only wore it once. lol.

I am getting new bike and new gear next Sept so I’ll stick all my current stuff for now.

Two tickets to Tenerife should sort it:cool:

Goretex Army Camo stuff (from surplus shop) is the cheapest way of staying dry in Winter. Just wear it over your leathers.

After much deliberation whether to ride again through the coming winter I think I’ll go for it but be more prepared than the last couple of years !Aldi Waterproofs cheap but effective, and they’re also more WP than my Gerickes too Jim.

IXON troos with thermals, brill last winter and still good for another season.

Gericke Panthan leather gloves - expensive and they look ridiculous but great for warmth and ingenious design.
And I have heated Gericke grips, well worth getting as I suffer badly with my hands, the Motrax Muffs I got last winter were rubbish.

Got my eye on a new Frank Thomas Jacket from Infinity.

Scuba divers waterproof socks for inside my boots and keep you warm too.

My tip - wrist bands, the blood is thin around the wrist thus losing warmth makes your hands cold

Chunks - don’t rub it in mate :stuck_out_tongue:

Subject to noe getting knocked off and injured, I shall be riding all the way through again. I adorn myself in Hein Gericke Gortex kit, I sometimes even put the liner in if its really cold. Get yourself some nice winter waterproof gloves, Hein Gericke again do these. Waterproof boots. And enjoy it, its not that bad usually.

What Waterproofs? HG one piece celtic (the cheapest one). Have been using it for over 4 years now and am quite happy. It’s not very stilish and a bit bulky but has always kept me dry (and until recently I had a daily 120 miles round trip commute)
What about “undergarments”? What for? There is a nice engine that generates enough heat to keep your legs happy.:stuck_out_tongue:
Neck and chin protection? Buff
Thermals or not? Nope. This is England we’re talking about, not Norway
Gloves? Frank Thomas Rage Water-proof. Pretty warm whilst not too bulky so feel is good and after a couple of days riding with them you barely notice them (but they are too warm for summer).
Anti-Visor misty thingies? Anti-mist visor + nose guard thingy (no idea what’s it’s called) that came with the helmet. All air-vents open at all times
Tips for keeping dry/warm. In traffic, buses, lorry, etc… generate welcome heat. The engine works as a toaster for hands. As for keeping dry, the most important thing to remember is wp trousers go over boots as do cuffs over gloves (otherwise the water comes down to your boots/inside your gloves). Allow for a greater distance when following a vehicle (esp. bikes) otherwise you get all the spray from their back wheels.

Anyone as brave/stupid as me? Your thoughts please friends. I ride in all weather except ice and thick fresh snow. I actually prefer riding in Winter.
