IT help quick!

im currently on a train to glasgow…

trying to get my headphones to work on laptop, so i can watch some dvds.

still have another 2 hrs to go.

headphones i have are of my phone, and have a mic built in.

prob is that when i plug them into jack socket on laptop, it recognises them as a mic only, and sound still comes out of the speakers.

any ideas?

windows 7 pro.

Some laptops have both a mic and speaker socket, make sure you are plugged in to the correct one.

This ^^ I think ALL have separate jacks, no? As do PC’s.

Have you tried turning it off and then on again? :stuck_out_tongue:

its a combined headset jack by the look of the symbol on the side - but it only seems to recognise the mic part of it

“Emergency! Must watch DVDs!”

Seriously though, is there no help in the Control Panel (bearing in mind there may be a separate section if your laptop has a dedicated soundcard rather than just Motherboard I/O).

Buy some off the trolley dolly?

or buy some off a random dude

disable the microphone in device manager if you can

or buy some decent headphones.
or a decent laptop

but then this was an hour ago, you’re half way through! man up and play some minesweeper instead

Did you try turning the volume up/taking it off mute!!:Whistling:

pull the plug out a little maybe

never encountered the issue before

Do you need sound to watch Porn?

Chances are they are wired differently - indeed they may break your laptop port if the expected impedances are drastically different. Don’t plug them in!

Oh wait, the train might have got there by now…

I assume your headphone jack had a tip, two rings, and the sleeve. To work correctly in the headphone port you need only tip ring sleeve. You most likely confused / shorted out the port.

Had I seen this post earlier I would have been able to help, sorry.

just the tip? suits you sir

ok, now on my return trip…

with new headphones…

and it still doesnt work.

only seems to be one jack socket on the thing - and it has a symbol of a headset next to it which would indicate it should recognise headphones and mic combined.

theres no individual mic option to disable in device manager

as for it being a cheap laptop, its far from it…

im disappointed, i thought this place was full of IT people and yet no one seems to have a clue…

pull it out a little?

Try a right click on the speaker icon in the dock. Open audio properties and make sure that output isn’t muted/turned off

tried both of the above and nothing.

theres no option for the sound output through the jack, it only seems to recognise it as a mic input, but when i googled the model number it says that it has a combined headphone/lineout jack

Q.

Do you plug your headphones in before or after the DVD is running?

if after, plug them in before you open the application.

If I want to watch a movie on my laptop and plug the speakers in when its already running, they won’t work.

its not just sound on a dvd that wont play through the jack socket, its the laptop itself (including media player)

makes no difference plugging in before or after media player is running, or even windows sounds in general
