IS THE BATTERY finished

hEY ALL,

Right, went to start bike but as i was doing it the bike seemed to just start dying.

It was trying to turn over then nothing. All i get now is the clicks from the starter (i think).

all lights work ect…

took the batt to the shop and charged it for 6 hours. put in the bike and it done the same but this time it went from trying to start to clicks in about 2 minutes.

Does the batt need replacing or could it be something else?

the battery is about a year old. (unless he ripped me off)

6 hours would’nt be enough iof it was being charged on a trickle charge like an optimiser needs to be at least 24 failing that then yes i’d say battery is kapow

not sure what type of charger is was. took it to a bike garage

Can we have a new section just for battery questions?

what you need to do is check the battery volts with a multimeter:

when engine is off should be around 13V, key on 12V, ignition pressed 11V, revs up 14V
check manual for exact measures just in case

lol def!

if the battery is reluctant to hold charge, try dropping it on the floor from about a foot. it supposedly knocks sulphates off the plates? i’ve never tried it myself, was listed in tips and tricks in this months RIDE… so it could well be total rollocks

If it is a sealed gel battery can’t see that really working. Given the weight of the damn things your more likely to split the plastic.

Plus Sulphuric acid and organics don’t mixed very well. So possibly best avoided.

I agree with Curtis, it would probably need at least 24 hours to fully charge.

10 Amp hour Battery being charge at 1 amp would take over 10 hours to fully charge.

no good if cant get bike started.

true but he said that he charged it and it started up but wouldnt start again…

You could buy (or find someone on here who has one) an optimate and put it on that overnight. That can recover batteries. However if the battery is a few years old and knackered it may be less hassle just to replace it. Battery problems and a bike failing to start are very irritating.

wheres he say that?

i read ‘time it went from trying to start’ as started… my bad

it’s buggered , time for a new one … , even with an optimate or the like batteries don’t long these days thats why they don’t have a warrenty

So can you not buy the old type batterys anymore? i used to find them better just top up the acid then charge and go…so much easier than fartarsing about wiv these sealed ones:D

have you tried push starting the bike? if you can start it that way then you can check the charging circuit with a meter. Failing that a new battery is probably the way to go and if you have the option then a battery tender for times when you are not using it for a couple of days (in very cold weather that can be all it takes to run a battery down) it is important to check the charging voltage as even sealed batteries can be boiled dry if overcharged
the other thing to check is whether the starter is turning at all? or is it jammed.

Really, never thought the cold effects it like that.

not tried push or jump starting it.

gonna buy a new batt tomorrow and see what happens.

anyideas where to pick one up around w12

phine chiswick honda and order one… if you ask they can charge it for you and all you need to do is pay when you pick it up

the cold can kill off even a good battery if it isn’t fully charged, push starting an in-line four shouldn’t be hard give it a go  I’ve had a couple of batteries give up the ghost in very cold weather, sometimes you can recover them other times not, you can have batteries delivered so no need to go out looking too far afield

did you get it sorted Kemp?

i have ordered the battery but im off for a few weeks so it’ll have to wait until i get back
