I think so. I think that was part of the game in those days before they got all organised.
If It was a 1970’s Austin 1300, Hillman Imp or Vauxhall Viva panda car I would definitely try and outrun them.
If it was the Sweeney in a souped up Granada GT I would give up immediately and say 'it’s a fair cop guv, you’ve got me banged to rights and no mistake, please don’t smash my boat race in and say that It was because I accidently fell down the apple and pears.
I like to think we provided an intensive high speed pursuit course for the coppers in York back in 1985. 
It was always a risk back then , you knew your bike was fast enough to outrun a Mk2 1.3 Astra …but was it reliable enough to make the distance .
