Insurance..

Why is my insurance so damned expensive?

I’m 35, I have 1 years riding under my belt with 1 years NCB, Ive held a car licence since I was 17 and have 6 years NCB on that (which they dont take into account bastards, but I’ll still loose both if I crash either vehicle), I have no convictions (well, two spent sp30’s from 2005) and my 07 600 Fazer is costing me nearly 700 quid a year to insure TPFT!! It actually went UP in year 2 despite the 1y NCB, and despite the SP30’s becoming effectively redundant!!

Out of interest, I’ve just got a quote for a 08 VFR 800 and they want over 2 grand TPFT! This is both Carol Nash and eBike. Carol Nash dropped to 1375 for the VFR selecting fully comp?? What is that about?

I’m really struggling to find affordable insurance even for a 600 cc :frowning: My missus passed her DAS today, so we need to insure her too, new rider and all I dread to think the cost.

bah!

Mid-30s with only a year or so under their belt = big risk.

I’m 39, and mine is £230 for comprehensive - but I’ve been riding (on the road) for 23 years

A lot of it depends on your postcode, and if the bike is garaged or on street.

I was quoted by same online insurance, London £800 - £1200, Oxford £400 (Yamaha R1). This was all same details, except address.

Yeah looks that way, high risk, address, not garaged. Bah. Guess I’ll have to suck it for another few years and make even more bloody sure I dont crash  Cheers guys.

My 07 SV was £197 odd - 43, 1yrs experience, alarmed, garaged at another address but will limited mileage (do not commute with it but am insured to) - I checked on the limited mileage, about increasing and they said give us a call when you are close and we’ll change it, no charge if no claims received!

I am with Devitt brokers, with Equity Red Star - Definitely ring round, try confused.com and then call the cheapest, see what they say and if it was like mine, it came out cheaper without telling them I used confused.com!!

I had an 06 Fazer when I passed my test, I live in a ‘good’ insurance postcode and am no spring chicken but still the first couple of years were a killer. Any bike ‘they’ consider may be ridden by nutters has a big insurance tag and I found that all insurers class the Fazer as a sports bike, which is one of the most expensive categories.

A couple of friends recently recommended Hastings Direct – it might be worth giving them a go?

The whole sorry business is a pain in the ass.

My mate who has a Rocket 3 has developed a technique of having all his details in front of him and ringing the best three or four quotes from “compare” and the like and asking for a quote. When he gets the answer his end of the conversation goes on the lines of:

How much!?
Is that the best you can do, your the most expensive so far!
That’s more than I’m paying on my (invented) Jag XJR.
And so on.

Works for him each year.

For what it’s worth:
I’ve just been doing the rounds as mine’s up for renewal and the best method seems to be entering details into the following two search engines:-

Tesco
http://www.tescocompare.com/motorbike.shtml?cmpid=tesco_referral/tpf/bikehome/motorbike_link

and

(you’ll have to guess that one).

They came up with some excellent quotes (and some rubbish ones). It’s almost useless to recommend individual companies as they change year-on-year for each individual rider.
For example I’ve been with H&R for the last 2 yrs yet this year they couldn’t compete with any of the best quotes I received. And that’s including after I called them back and let them know my best offers (which you MUST do).

I would not touch Tesco.

The history is too long and boring to recount but, sufficient to say, I know no one who’s been there that hasn’t ended up paying more than the on line quote in the end.

They have invented a whole raft of new tricks to lever more money from you after you’ve nowhere else to go as your old policy has expired.

Seems unlikely but they give insurance companies a bad name.

My brand new 07 ZX6R last year, late 30’s, zero ncb, new rider, zero experience, two claims on a car and an SP30 was £600 fully comp. I guess there has to be one benefit of living up here in the winderness

Blimey, that is good. (I wouldn’t have touched you with a barge pole!)

Good tips all reound thanks chaps and chapesses, but now I’m confused.com  Really, even after using confused.com.

I’m still looking at the brand new VFR800, which I’m test riding on sunday.

Cheapest at confused.com was just 405 quid, ranging to 2,500 quid.

I have had a few follow up calls (the type you get when you start asking about insurance) and one broker (associated with eBike if anyones interested) came back with a 1045 quote for the VFR with leather cover, 60 day EU cvover, legal cover breakdown, blah blah, all the bells and whistles including key cover whatever that is (but will it cover my LB keyfob??).

Makes me think I can find it cheaper, but the 405 puts me off just because its so cheap and the others all float around the 1k mark when i go direct.

hmmmmm. Its a sorry state of affairs… mebe i’ll just keep the fizzer for another year…

PS: But then actually its only 20 quid a month more, and thats what, 4 beers??? Sod it, if i’m going to pay over the odds, why settle for 800cc? Mebe I’ll get a STripple, or a CB1000R or a FZ1 and say balls to the lot of 'em  Roll on the test rides!

I think you’ve just got to be sure the company that is offering the cheapest is legitimate and good at what they do. If you’ve never heard of them do a few searches in Google and see if anything bad comes up. Notoriously awful companies normally attract a fair few comments across the web.

I bit the bullet cos I couldn’t stay with the Fazer – it sounds like you’re going to do the same. Good luck!

Hve just renewed the insurance on my 01 fazer, and was delighted to find out that if as a result of an accident I lose a limb or limbs they will cough up 7500 quid:)

If I lose sight in one or both eyes they will again fork out 7500 quid

Same for loss of hearing or permanent disability.

And Finally 7500 pounds in case of death:w00t:

Neither would I ! :stuck_out_tongue: The benefits of shared risk in the insurance market

Hope this doesn’t count as a hijack…I’ve been driving a car for 11 years and had had one claim in 2006 but had protected no claims bonus. I sold my car a couple of months ago and will be learning to ride a bike starting next month. When I come to insure a bike, will my NCB count for nothing, but my claim will count? As I’m currently uninsured with anyone for any vehicle, would I be able to come in as a totally fresh insuree? Would that in fact make it more expensive? Too many questions?!

4 beers ? £20 ? 'kinell, you drink in the wrong boozers, mate.

Mind you, my sis went for a drink last week after work with a client, and 5 gin and tonics and 2 bottles of beer came to £67 !

I’ll never go on the **** around Canary Wharf, methinks !

when i was 24 i got a quote fot a 08 plate bandit

with a tt99 code on my licence nd they wanted over 3000 pounds for it

which im paying and thats wuith 2 years no claims
