Insurance With No Garage

I’ve just been on the phone to Swinton to change my insurance over. Initially she said 3rd party was all anyone would insure me, based on me not having my bike in a garage overnight.

She had to drop the value of the bike to £5k for me to have Fully Comp. I seem to recall this happened on my last bike.

We do have a garden so I guess I could get a shed, but for some reason the access to the garden from outside is through the neighbours drive, which might make it a pain for me to get out if they park across it!

Are some insurers better for this than others? Should I try somewhere else?

Try the comparison sites, you’ll soon see who’s willing to take on the risk. If its not garaged I hope its off street at least with a ground anchor and Almax. Some insurers do list the Almax in their security devices. Good luck.

a shed still wont qualify as a garage to insurers and wont make a difference, the want the building to be made of brick or something equivalent

It is off street, but as I rent, I guess I would need to ask about having a ground anchor installed. I was thinking of locking it to my car, but maybe they’ll just take both!

i went with hastings, as i dont have a garage, but my bik is in a gated carpark. If i had a garage the insurance would be 50% cheaper.

Go to www.tiger.co.uk - best comparision site for bikes I’ve changed each year for my insurance. Unless you have claims the marketplace is used to people chopping and changing each year.

Just had a similar problem. Was looking at getting a Thunderbird, but nobody will insure it unless it’s garaged. I have tried the comparison sites and phoning companies direct but none of them are prepared to quote, even though the bike would be parked in a private area off the road. Whereas with a garage I have quotes as low as £550…

Doesn’t everyone with a bike have a garage <wink wink> :Whistling:

Or just put a brick built shed in your back garden instead of those budget wood B&Q ones. Sent you a PM.

most of us do, but failing that, do what i did at a Butlins chalet a few years back

Lol thats quality Martin. I bet the cleaner had a shock when he/she found out there were two bikes to clean as well as the room :stuck_out_tongue:

I just insured my bike (valued at £5k) for TPFT with Swinton for £400ish. I keep mine in my front garden with an Oxford Omega disc lock and an Almax on it though. I found that if I wanted protected NCB or even pillion cover with that though they wouldn’t quote me for some reason.

The bikes look cleaner than the sheets, did you run them a while to fumigate the bugs?

I was fortunate that I was able to rent a garage for a £10 a week near where I live, or i would have had the same trouble…and no I can’t help you get one :frowning: sorry.

I’m seriously bemused by this insurance thing.

£15K car, insured full comp. for 3 years. Year 1 = parked on a driveway, Year 2 = parked in a locked compound, Year 3 = parked in a very secure garage. Difference in annual premium between year 1 and year 3 = £20

Bike is much the same. No garage last year, now in very secure garage. Difference in annual premium this year to last £0:56p!

Even allowing for me being an old f*rt and the vehicle values depreciating, it seems the insurance companies only place value on a vehicle being garaged when it suits them.

Most places wouldn’t even insure my Tiger 800XC as I had no garage in West London. Many were looking for £2000+

The only place that was “reasonable” was Ebike, which I went with.

Immobilisers seemed to make a significant difference to the insurance, possibly more than an alarm - at least when I was searching.

I’ll be interested to try that tiger comparison site

Tiger pointed me at Ebike too. £550 fully comp.

Daniel, thanks for the PM but as I rent, i cant really go building things :frowning:

I think i will chain the bike through my cars alloy though

Trust you have security bolts on the alloys?

Alternative is you might find on morning that you have no bike an a 3 wheeled car. can be a rotten start to the day.

@ Andy - Something like this you can take away with you? http://www.asgardsss.co.uk/detail.php?pro_code=MB1

Yeah, I do. I’m not even sure I could take one of them off even if I wanted to!
