So I start doing quotations, and most of them were way up there (especially when the simple mods are declared - seriously, these are not performance mods!). I tried MCE, GoCompare, Swinton, CIA, thebikeinsurer, motorcycledirect, Aviva, confused.com, moneysupermarket, MCNCompare, CompareTheMeerkat, Bikesure, Endsleigh, Bikedevil – all above £800 when the mods were included.
I finally got a reasonable price through Carole Nash: mods listed on policy, paid a total of £594.84 with £500 total excess and a £29.99 excess-insurance policy that covers up to £500 excess in the event of a claim. (The alternative was £648.94 with £250 compulsory excess). Also includes legal protection, full AA including homestart (although I already have that), driving other vehicles. Funny thing is, the underwriter is Aviva - who quoted me over £900 when spoken to direct. Go figure.
Yes I can’t understand the industry. My car quote this year with Admiral went up by about £300 so I phoned them up and said I’d had a better quote from Elephant.co.uk so they said, “We actually own Elephant.co.uk, what is the refernece number? We’ll do that for you.”
I wonder do people who don’t check each year just get fleeced? My bike renewal quotes weren’t too bad this year, about £600 but there are cheaper quotes on line so I’ll have to negotiate with them again.
I have to say, to the credit of ebike, that at least it wasn’t an “automatic renewal” – they sent letters without a quote, basically saying that I have to call to quote for renewal, and if I don’t then the insurance will lapse. I think that’s the right approach, and they weren’t trying to auto-fleece me. It was only when I called up that I found out it had doubled. Apparently it was because the existing insurer I was with wouldn’t provide a quote for me this year…sigh
Just had a quote for a KLE500 (just for fun) fully comp, 7yrs NCB, old person, **** postcode though, £168 with £250 excess. Just get over 40 and prices come down. Will also look at other bikes as I am tired of the little 250 now.
I was with CIA and the insurer was La Parisienne… one year it’s £800, the next it’s £1,250 (only points included, not the accidents in the car)… I phone and they said sorry La Parisienne won’t insure you any more so we’ve had to go someone else
I got a quote from MCE - £800 (though had to add the points, the accidents in the car) but with extra benefits (business level insurance)… Paperwork comes in… guess who the insurer is. Yup, La Parisienne
I have a feeling when they say the insurer won’t insure you, it’s a negotiating tactic to persuade you…
when I renewed November last year I had a comedian renewing mine. Told me my insurance had gone up. Bugger I think, then after hanging me on a string he said it had gone up by a whole one pound!! So two bikes with 3 years NCB one 600 Bandit 54 plate and 59 plate SV650S for £209 OK so I’m an old git of 41 now.
Just got my renewal notice in from Motorcycle direct today . KTM 990 supernonsense …fully comp … £132.56 . I really dont see what everyone is griping about :D:Whistling: … edit . although that does include an 11 quid documentation charge … which I shall query !!
