Basically I’m trying to find insurance on a ZX-6R. The insurance company I’m with at the moment won’t insure me on it (cos they’re fools!) so I need to find another company which will insure me, without charging stupidly extortionate prices.
That’s what really burns me up about this stupid ‘33bhp restriction’ is that the insurance companies don’t recognise a difference with it. A ZX is probably going to be slower than the ruddy SV they’ve got me riding at the moment, so why should I still have to pay so much. grumble
Anyone know of any decent companies that I may not have checked yet?
Just did the Go compare and the confused interweb thingo and Bennetts, Swinton and Bikesure seemed to be the best (for me)…my lot just told me they are no longer insuring in UK (Irish Quinn) which was a pain.
Thanks for the suggestions - tried them all but they were all over £1000. Managed to find it for £620 from MCE - although that is third party only… It’s only a 1998 ZX-6R which I’m getting for £500 so if it gets nicked or I bin it then it would only cost me more to go through the insurance anyway, so for now I can live with just third party I think.
Got cover for other bikes and certain amount of european cover so I’m happy with that. Just need to call up my dad and get him to hold the bike for me
ditto for me as well bennetts quoted me £260 fully comp on a gixxer thou the next best to this was £380 my current insurance company, so it pays to shop around come renewal time
Bennetts were the cheapest by far for my 1st year and then they tried to to wack the price up loads for my 2nd year, I went with MCE this year, they gave me a fully comp policy for my cbr 600 for £360, would have be rude to say no
a mate was insured with them on a gixxa6…that got killed so he got a blade, got a quote from honda insurance, went back to suzuki…who beat the quote!!
both of us are insured with suzuki express and i cant fault them…and i havent heard anything bad about them either:)
i think tho 33bhp restriction will make a difrence, an SV is a completly different insurance group to a ZX-6R…thats the problem, the insurance company wont base it on wether the restricted ZX is quicker than the SV…then theres the theft rates, i bet more ZX-R’s go missing than SV’s…
Don’t mind me asking mate but you on full license?? If you have other bikes insured do you have any no claims bonuses? just wondering… not sure why people have restricted R6s or 600s in general either:( if they don’t have full license.
Has anyone got any experience of these companies if you need to claim? It is easy to make the assumption that the lowest premium is the best but if you are fully comp then the way they handle claims is an important factor.
Bennets are offering low prices but have come in for some stick on the Praise or Shame forum.
I have a restricted license, and would usually agree with you that restricted 600’s seem a bit pointless… Which is why I used to have the GPZ. Now that’s gone I was going to get an SV - my dad had one I could have real cheap from the dealership he works at but I just didn’t like the naked one. They had one other bike there I could have but they said I could have it for £500. Nothing wrong with the bike that’s just how much they paid for it on a part exchange.
Just seemed at that price I might aswell have it if I can… Although I would preferred to have an SV whilst on the restriction - but perhaps I’ll just wait until I can afford a newish bike then get one later
neah get the 600 mate, frankly I would hurry up to get my DAS done. At £500 I would get it regardless… you could just practice your U turns emergency breaking and such in a car park or private area. Can’t beat having a 600 to play abouts with getting ready for your DAS.
You on L plates mate so you won’t get any favours really… my neighbour put his wife on his car with provisional license so L plates also and it went up by almost £1000 from £300 so yeah they asked £1200… not much you can do.
If I say get it and ride it without Insurance I would be stupid since I expressed my opinion on people that ride even 100 meters without insurance on public roads. On the other hand if you can use it on a private road to practice for your DAS don’t insure it. Get it and keep it uninsured until you pass and don’t ride it, or if it is a while until you pass get it restricted and… well pay the heavy insurance premium.
Remember most of us had to pay about £800 TPFT for our first 600s, I did… on my 2001 600 I had a premium of £870 with Express. Now it is £540 fully comp and that’s after 2 years of no claims.
BTW after how many years of no claims can you protect it?? Is it 3 years???
Cheers - but I already have a full license I just have to be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years from when I passed because I’m only 19, so I can’t do the DAS. The restriction will come off before I’m 21 anyway so I won’t ever have to do the DAS.
I’ve never owned a 125 with L plates, I just did my CBT then went and did my full test straight away and bought a GPZ500.
ahhh nice one… well I guess you just skip every word that has DAS in it:)
I guess you’ll have to just pay the insurance. I knew a guy that had a brand new R6 restricted:) at 18… no idea how he was paying for his insurance… probbaly mommy and daddy or hard work:)
Yeah that’s about right. The hire SV I’ve got at the moment is restricted, red lines in every gear except 5th and 6th. 5th it hits around 9 and 6th it stops at 7.5 at around 110mph - of course I didn’t try that on public roads though
With the SV though it is only ~70bhp and being a twin it has the torque lower down so you don’t lose much after restriction. The ZX is ~100bhp and an IL4 so… well we’ll see, I don’t need a stupidly fast machine, and I’ve got insurance down to £594. The insurance company I’m with at the moment apparently would cost £99999.00  I get the feeling they just don’t want to insure me on this bike
