Any advise on where to look for good quotes this year:
Best I’ve had so far is £479 with a massive excess (500 voluntary + 400 compulsory) fully comprehensive for an 09 CBR600RR kept in a locked garage in SW7. I have 4 years no claims bonus so I was hoping I’d get better than that this year especially the excess.
I’ve been to thebikeinsurer, confused and mce thus far.
My insurance expires on the 18th and I only remembered this morning, thanks to a “3 day reminder” I set in my phone - rather than my current insurers sending through a renewal … so that was lucky
Will be spending my evening working through the above guide on MoneySavingExpert … typing details into forms again and again and again … then being hounded by sales vultures on the phone all day tomorrow … joy
Be interested to hear if anyone else has any “new places” that aren’t in the MoneySavingExpert guide though so can check with them too.
Carol Nash is looking attractive because it’s only a £400 compulsory excess. It’s either that or go for something cheaper and try not to crash. To be honest these aren’t really bad quotes. I think because I lived in Guildford last year I was expecting something better. My first year on the RR I only had one quote of £1000, all the others were over £2K. I had to call them up and verify the quote before I bought the bike.
I’ll have to have another go in the next week and see if it gets any better. It has to be renewed by 6th of May.

I’d go for the £516 one with Swinton if you don’t mind not having breakdown cover.
My reasons:
The policy is £179 cheaper (695-516)
In the event of a fault accident you will only be out of pocket £71 (£250 increase in excess minus the £179 saving on the policy). Its worth the risk I reckon.
For my 2005 Hornet, with 3 years NCB, I had the following choice to make (TPFT) :
Bikesure : £306 - with a £350 excess - [with the option to buy an “excess protection” policy - making the excess effectively 0 for £40 … net result … £346]
or
Bike Devil (who I’d never heard of - but apparently they are MCE) : £339 - with a £0 excess - [so they win Bikesure] … and a “special offer” to protect my NCB for £20 at 3 years - where normally you can only protect your NCB at 4 years + … net result … £359
So - I went with Bike Devil’s £359 price.
I’ve probably spent £50 more than I needed to compared with Bikesure’s £306 price … but figured in the event of needing to claim … spending £50 now when I can afford to, will save me £350’s worth of excess in the future … and yes I’ll have to declare I’ve had a claim at renewal time which will bump up premiums … but by still having 3 years NCB … I should save that £20 …
The cheapest price I started with was £425 - so I haggled the best part of £100 off, have a £0 excess, and have got added extras, so can’t complain too much I guess.
Carole Nash are always about 3x more expensive for me than anywhere else!
I just renewed at £175 with Bikesure, before any extras like breakdown etc… Carole Nash wanted almost £600!!
I got a call from Swinton yesterday, they are doing some early call for renewal thing to try and lock people back in with them. Last year on my Vara I paid £398, they quoted me initially around £480. I increased my milage from 4,000 to 9,000 and that bumped it to £575!
I then asked how much I would save if I fitted a Tracker… nothing at all The guy suggested maybe I had so much security on it, I was at the maximum security discount.
I then spent 10 minutes haggling and get them to give me £80 cashback before I agreed to re-insure.
Well others had said it didn’t effect your premium, so I figured I should do. I want my policy to be as accurate as possible. I don’t want them to have an reason to not payout if needed.
He made an odd comment when I did it ‘Good idea, cause otherwise your not covered on the miles you do above the 4,000’. Now I don’t know how they would know how many miles I’ve done on that policy. but at the same time, if I have a 15 month old bike with 9,000 miles and I say I do 4,000 a year, looks a little fishy!
Well is an “estimated mileage”. What he said isn’t true unless your insurance certificate specifically says you are only covered for 4,000 miles then its still exactly what it says, your estimated mileage. Not to mention that in the UK most people have insurance to ride other bikes so wheres the proof you did all the 9,000 miles?
On my policy the milage didn’t change that much when I upped it, though I had to say what was personal and what was business as I’ve got class 1 insurance.
But messing around which had the most didn’t make the price move that much.
