import and non-import insurance difference?

Hi Guys,

I am in the market for a 400 sport bike and one thing came to mind today was the insurance. As you know, quite a few 400s are import and I am just wonder if that mean they more expensive.

I never own an import bike and when I insurance my bike they always ask that question, why it is import to the insurance company? If there’s a lot of different in insurance price between import and non-import it might affect the bike I might buy.

cheers guys

As I understand it the extra you’ll pay on the insurance premium for an imported motorcycle will not be too much. Raise the voluntary excess and you’ll probably not even notice it.

Why do they charge extra? Its mainly to do with repairs cost. Vehicles manufactured for specific markets outside the UK/Europe are often built to a different specification and will have different parts/panels which can be difficult to come by as well as being more expensive than the parts/panels used for the UK/European market. Some imported vehicles may also require some modification before they can be used on UK roads.

Since insurance companies have made a science out of quoting premiums every little risk needs to be assessed and covered in the small print.

On the 400cc bikes. Most will be older than 10 years if not 20 so oem parts aren’t as widely available but aftermarket are fine. You can source them easily
