Ignition advancer or PC ignition module

Has anybody used a mechanical ignition advancer on a FI bike ? Power Commander ignition module ? Factory Pro sell a mechanical plate, looks interesting. Any experiences ?

Haven’t used one but would be v interested to hear of any experiences using them on a carbed bike as well, specifically an R1. Much difference?

I have a 5 degree advancer on my Bandit Normally aspirated… Woke it up… best bit of “upgrade” I put on it. Then ended up doing the needles and now its just plain MEAN. Typical carb’d bikes from the factory are a) choked by the exhaust b) lean and c) ingnition is retarded… why? to pass all the emissions and noise tests that are out now. Change the can, change the needles (breathes better need more fuel) and either get a fix or adjustable timing advancer.

The bandit with just those mods realized an additional 24 BHP!!! This is from a bike that from the factory is only 98BHP! A whooping 24-25% increase in HP for less than a grand out lay.

Thanks Morgawr, I have heard of extraordinary power increases - exactly as you report for the Bandit above. However if I drop a grand into my bike, I can get a newer, quicker one anyway. Does the advancing plate typically need a full system and filter / jet kit to make the most of it, or will it work quite well with just a can?

Would imagine these gains are better made by Power commander in your case Slarty - as I understand advancing the ignition is one of the things it can do via a custom map?

Thanks, thinking of getting the plate for the 750, not heard very good things about the Power Commander ignition module, only gives 2 or 3 degrees of adjustment, they used to cause ignition scatter too with the IIIr.

The ignition is usually retarded quite a lot to account for poor quality petrol and temperature differences plus the carbon build up you used to get with high mileage. Not usually as much on a FI engine as there’s better ignition control anyway but it might be worth a shot.
