I replaced the stator on the CX and now the starter clutch slips...

The other day I had the back of the engine off to fit a new stator. I initially used too-thin a gasket on so the starter hardly turned the first time I tried to turn the engine over. I pulled the cover off and fitted a new, proper-thickness, gasket.

The starter then worked for a few times to get the engine running but now slips - I’ve only tried it a few times but it reliably spins and I can hear that something is happening in the engine, but the crank’s not turning over.

The cog with which the starter engages is behaving as properly as I can test by hand - it spins one way but not the other, and I can just about manhandle it into turning the crank.

This was working absolutely fine prior to my fiddling with the stator, so I’m assuming I’ve done something to break it…

The starter clutch is hidden pretty well behind the flywheel (which I’ve not touched) so I don’t think I’m likely to have nudged it. Anyone familiar enough with a CX’s innerds to suggest what I might have done?

More importantly, if I can stand push-starting it is this likely to be mechanically safe to run?

It is probably just worn out
Take the rest apart, fresh oil etc and it decided to give up
They were very reliable but must be 30 years old

I pull it back out and have a look
I think you need a 16 or 18 mm bolt / male extractor to full the rotor off
