I need a new chain I think:::

So…my Mrs and i had a 300 mile round trip to do today and,as the weather is good, decided to go by bike. We went on our XJR1200. Fully checked over , chain oiled (over!) and off we went.
In the outside lane of the Autopista Mediterraneo (AP7) at about 85 ish in heavy traffic when there was an almighty BANG! followed by a whining vibration.
Was able to coast through the lanes and get to the hard shoulder and found this…The chain gave my Mrs a bit of a slap but no broken skin…We were recovered back home and I was surprised by what we found.
This is what a snapped chain does to itself:)
Still, could have locked up and been a lot worse…

WA WA WeeWa - never seen a snapped chain before. Your Mrs is luck not to be seriously hurt, I hear that chains can cause some serious damage when they let go.

jesus, aside from the damaged chainguard, did it maul anything else when it was flailing about? damn lucky it didnt lock up the rear!

ouch that was a lucky escape bet the mrs will end up with a cracking bruise

lucky…! I assume she was wearing proper bike boots?

ouch ouch!!

Mutu on here snapped his chain and mullered his Touno’s crankcase…new engine time!

my mate snapped his R1’s chain at around 150-160mph:w00t: luckly it just flew straight out of the back! he also saved a rear blow out by pulling a stoppie to slow…lucky fugger he is:D

F0ck me.

I’m checking my chain carefully tonight!

Bloody hell looks like you both had a very lucky escape. What type of chain was it and what was the mileage? Please don’t say it was DID ZVM2… :w00t:

If the chain was on quite tight to begin with could it have happened because of extra tightness introduced by a pillion as the shock compresses?

Or was it just a faulty link?

Stone me, you were lucky.

The last (and only) m/c chain I had break wrapped itself around the rear sprocket and jambed against the swinging arm. Left an interesting rubber line on the (old) A21 and I’m still not sure how I hung on to the bike without a major incident.

The rear tyre was “a bit” flat spotted and the swinging arm kind of ruined. Fortunately, there was almost no other traffic at the time.

She was but the chain actually hit her on the thigh…I just don’t know what caused the break…it’s (was) a quality chain which had been properly maintained. It was adjusted taking into account sag etc, so I just don’t get it:)

Like I said, it could have been much worse and must say the following car drivers reacted exactly as I hoped ( the one following me got on the brakes very sharpish:D)
