how to derestric a 400 grey import

Hi all,

I apologise if i open a similar topic to the rpevious one,

any of you have experience in de restrict a restricted bike?

if a bike is restricted to 33bhp, is it legal to derestrict it?

as i understood searching on the web most restrictors are placed in the carbs inlets so i think just take them off and that’s it…

On ebay though i found a derestriction kit fo 50 pounds, what’s all about???

any of you can help me???

Yes, my bike was restricted. I just had to remove a metal plate that stops the throttle twisting back all the way.

Yes, its 100% legal.

Restrictor kits are required in the UK if you are under 21 years of age or if you have done a restricted licence. This will change soon as new stricter laws are coming in. A restrictor kit for my bike is approx. £150. There are different types; but your right old 400s are usually where the carbs are. Its just a washer type ring that reduces the air intake.

hi, thanks for that

the guy who is selling the bike just sent me this link

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M-Max-Rev-Booster-De-Limiter-MH40SF-Honda-NC31-CB400SF2-92-93-/200665707715?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2eb89bb4c3#ht_712wt_1082

from what i can see there is a cable and something else, that;s confusing me…

if there were only restrictors in the carbs there should be no kit, just take them out and that’s it… ???

Don’t let the bike being restricted to 33bhp put you off. Whatever has been done to restrict it can be reversed. The only way you will know how its been restricted is to get the bike home and take a look. If the bike runs well and you can get it at a good price get it.

Don’t commit to any parts before you buy it as you may not even need them. Any good mechanic should be able to derestrict it with an hour’s labour and parts if required. Talk to Adz on the forum he can advise you better than me.

Hello mate,

If you’ve not already found it I would suggest this forum,

http://www.400greybike.com/

Theres tons of hardcore 400 riders on here that know everything and anything about greys. Someone there should be able to give you a detailed break down on how to do it.

I think theres even a mods section which details how to de restrict the RVF 400. ( at least there was when i had mine)

check it out

the bike I saw is in very good conditions,

it’s a 1992 cb400 with new front and rear suspensions, new tyres and brake discs fo £700

the only thing that put me off is the restriction…

I found out that the kit he sent me is a “derestricted CDI” so it should be quite simple to just replace it…

if restricted, does it appear in the v5, should i advise dvla of the mod?

Don’t let that put you off its easily taken off

Its just as simple as taking the old one off and plugging that one in.

No it doesn’t appear in the v5. No, there is no need to.

Also, if the bike has been restricted the engine has had an easier life in theory.

mmmm Daniel thanks a lot for your help, you have been great…

I think i’ll go for it then…

(just hope i won’t need to rebalance the carbs…)

Speak to Adz (Click here) for more advice and if you want to book it in for a service or derestriction.

I’d go for it and “worry” later about derestricting. It should be beautifully run in by now.

The CB400 was imported into this country in the '80’s and was popular with couriers doing central London work for a while (when they got cheap secondhand) so there ought to be plenty a used spares around.

From (unreliable) memory the engine and drive train were pretty solid but rest was pretty average and the finish was not up to Honda’s normal standard. I have a feeling that I read somewhere that a lot of the not so good bits were outsourced and pattern parts replacements were better than the original bits.

.

thanks to all of you guys…

yeah i’ll go for it and then think later about the derestriction…

Cheers!

Weren’t some of the Jap bikes restricted to 112 mph at some stage as well?

Yep, the restriction was removed with a speedo conversion involving the cable IIRC.

yeah that restriction (japan law)would cut the rpm in 6th gear aournd 5000 6000 rpm i found out, my bike has the restrictor washers so it only revs up to 6 hardly 7k rpm in all gears instead of the 11k…

I apologise for my last post.

yesterday i tried full trottle and it arrived at 11k rpm!!!

so at this point i’m confused, i think i have no restrictor washers fitted !?!

maybe i thought it was restricted because there is a sort of power loss / misfire at around 5k but then it goes fine again…

Two different conversations going on here. The 33 horse power restriction is a kit added to the bike to make it comply with UK restricted license regulations. It is not legal to remove this unless you have a full unrestricted license. Japanese grey import bikes have top speed limiters, which work differently depending on make, model and year. How to derestrict will vary accordingly, but a naked 400 won’t do much more than 112mph anyway. How often do you ride faster than that?

the Bros/Hawk is restricted to 116mph, and is done in the rev counter (so im told, not sure how) by when you hit 116 it puts the rev limiter down to 5k untill you drop down the speed.

that said, ive never used it.
